How'd you get your start?

Started with a tascam porta 4 track and a little home stereo with a turntable. Break on track 1 pause, cue up trk 2 play break from record pause,back to track 1 ect., ect. Track 3 vocal snippets, trk 4 horns, guitar other samples. Back breaking work, eventually i stole a alesis sr16 from a music store( I know, I know, but I was poor and I do feel bad about that one, I was young and stupid.) Heard dj Shadow used a mpc, copped one from musicians friend, when they used to let you do payments with a debit card $250 a month. Bought 2 gemini turns and started DIGGIN' . Bought a roland mc 505 and started making beats for my boy at work, Put out a demo of 4 songs, my boy got locked up. I gave up sold all my ish EXCEPT MY MPC 2000 . Pulled my MPC back out the box a year ago started maxin it out, bought a cs1x, and started remixin, hoping to buy a qs6.2 soon and get back to makin' good tracks. Anyway some guy I know asked me to show him how to start makin traks the other day, he says he has MTV music generator(video game) and fruity loops and I dont even wanna talk to the fool. Pisses me off, some people just dont get the lifestyle.

Here's a little story.....

I started this whole thing back in like '86, I got this little Radio Hack Realistic mixer.
Two old school no pitch having record players, trying to mix teenie bop $h!t, and some R&B stuff (whatever I could get my hands on).
Then I picked up a boss DR.110 , to make beats to scratch to.
Then I graduated to the Boss DR-550, cause it had 4 banks of sound.
Time went by and I got a copy of Acid Pro, WORD I started makin ill joints with that.
Remixing my A$$ off, did a CD called "Edit with Beats" the cover art looks like a Tide detergent ad.
Then I held a MPC2K for a Minute, feel mad for it.
Had to give it back, still had Acid.
Computer broke, lost all that work (but made a little CD back up).
Picked up An Akai S-20 and TR-505, to fill the Gap.
Present day just got a MPC 2KXL, Pro tools rig set up.
Flipped my name from Edit-one to Enotide, ready to put some $h!t together.

In junior high beating on school lockers and empty plastic buckets for the beat. Hearing beats ringing in my mind constantly. Thinking how to add, changing or edit that Jones Girls songs and etc. Making little pause tapes back in the days giving them to friends and trying to find the shit everyone haven`t heard yet or choosing the cut off albums for mixtapes that were never released for singles. Scratching on a old school record player that I patched together to a woofer I got out of tech school. Blasting hip hop outside on the carport with my little setup in the summer. Messed with a friends Yamaha keyboard pick up a Boss 202 sampler went to onsen (hot spring) talk about music with a friend schooled me on the mpc 2000 and counting bars and arranging got the mofo on layaway. Lots of reading, tips online, and F**ing up but never giving up and learning from trial and error and new things everyday Needed the 8 outs there were a shortage here so I decided what the hell eventually I needed a full sampler with the filters went to a 4000 . Now I have the setup I need just striving to master all of it to make exactly the music I hear in my soul like I really want it to sound.

Well . . . . . as w/ most crate-diggers I started out as a DJ . But every DJ knows that at some point you say to yourself "How is all this good sh!t made possible ?" . Enter the 1st cost-worthy MPC . . . the OG 2000 . I remember being amazed that it was a "G" cheaper than the 3000 (and SP-1200's were stepping into thier "collectors" stage . . . . mad dough) so I stacked my chips, copped the MPC2000 and that was that . Slowly through the years I have transformed my MPC from David Banner to The Hulk (thanks to upgrades) . My MPC helped me choose a life rather than just being happy making a living (it definitely has taken precedence over my DJing) . AKAI IS THE SH!ZZY & ROGER LINN IS THE F#CKIN' MAN ! Peace .
