smaller alternatives for that crunchy drum sound?

my new 950 is a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be and I'm having trouble fitting into my small bedroom, so are there any smaller machines that give you that little bit of crunch and grime like the 950 or SP12 does?

I'm not specificly after a 12 bit machine, just something that gives your samples (especially drums) a little bit of old school character.
I understand machines like the s20 or Ensoniq EPS 16+, although they are 16 bit, still give your samples a distinctive grimey sound.
Are there any small units that would do the trick that I may not know of?

i might be wrong on this one....

but i think the sp303 and 404 have downsampling capabilities - i.e. they
can sample at lower rates, 12 bit etc.

google it yo - i'm sure you can track this down if you have a bit of a search.

but there are other ways to get similar effects. run your samples
on to cassettes (or reel to reel tape if you can get access) or VHS and then
resample.

If you need sothing smaller go for the Roland SP-303/404.
Cause and EPS 16+ is gonna be as big as the S950 or bigger.

I use a roland s330 for my drums, I sample at 12bit 15khz then brighten it up with a certain eq.. Gets a real nice sound for drums..

The top couple of beats.. I might upload some more later that I done a lil more crunchy and dirty then the ones on the page but they still a good example of a sound that can be achieved by that particular sampler.. maybe that will help a bit

Oh and its a very thin small rackmount mixer, much much smaller then an s950

Don't sleep on the SP202 either. It doesn't have the same amount of effects as the 303 or 404, but it has 4 different sample rates. You can't resample, so you have to pick one of the 4 sample rates ahead of time, and then totally re-record the sample if you want to try it on a different sample rate, but that's not really a big deal. It has hi-fi mode, standard, lo-fi, and lo-fi2. I love that machine and use it all the time. It's mad small and also battery powered.

not exactly. On the sp404 you can sample or resample in Lofi mode but it doesnt really give a great sound, it doesnt do much to the sound at all- its purpose is just to give you extra sample time. but there are plenty fx on the SPs to give you any sound you want.

To get a warm lo fi sound I amp up my drum sound and mic it using a dynamic mic with a nice preamp (I use a tube). Mic positioning can be changed to change the sound, just try varying it to get something you like. Either record directly to the mpc or into your pc for transferring across. Cheaper than new hardware...

Take the bed out and sleep on the 950.

im assuming your talking about the first cut .. i am pretty sure that is skinny man. Could be wrong though

2 things i saw people do :

1) Put ur shit on Tape... but take some time to minimize the hiss... it will make ur sound warmer if its done better

2) Most old school heads that made beats on the sp 12... admitted they used to speed up the sample (eg turntable at +8%, 45 , on a 33...)... and then pitch em down in the sp... So u could just... play ur sound pitched up... and slow it down in the machine.. itreduced the resolution, it gives a gritty feel + reduces sampling memory used (which is the primary reason for using this) i promise it works.. to me it does make the sound ''dryer'' a bit like early madlib stuff...
