Assuming you mean the EB16 card that slots inside the MPC2000/XL, yes you can live without it.

Disadvantages
* Now quite dated sounds and spec

althought they're kinda nice to have around.....

you can do quite a bit of manipulation without one, if thats what you're into. You can still mess with the filter, decay, attack etc. just on the machine.
