MPC 1000 and Ableton Live

Anyone use this combination?

I have a RME 9632 card. MIDI sync to Live setup up OK. When I record into Live, MIDI tempo and the start of the sequence jumps around but then settles down. My latency is setup correctly.

I also have a Elektron Monomachine synced to the MPC and the tempo jumps around on that. Any ideas?

so if i understand this correctly you are slaving the mpc to ableton live?


If so and your getting midi clock jitters I would say it has to do with your PC. I would try to disconnect the elektron too just to make sure it isnt anything to do with that. I dont really know what to suggest if it is a PC issue. Try freeing up some RAM or something. Sorry I dont really have any more suggestions.

Yeah if that stuffs jumping around you may want to think about a new midi interface - or upgrading your OS - I just upgraded to OS X on the Mac and latency is a thing of the past - finally - thank god and his dad plus two of his disciples but not limited to their kids kids grand kids, who i went to High School with

The odd thing is the monomachine jitters and the tempo is slightly out. I can understand the PC having latancy issues.

Ah computers - thinking of dumping it anyway. Gone from a complete hardware setup to software only. Now heading back to hardware only - and I'll think I'll stay that way.

Could there be a MIDI loop? I mean, if MIDI Thru is set on both the MPC and Ableton, the MIDI can go around in loops and confuse the PC. A quick test to turn off Soft Thru totally at the MPC (MIDI Mode).

Even though the MPC is the master... if you are using a 'cheap' midi interface like a midisport 2x2 it can stutter like that.

You might try adding about 4 bars of silence to the start of each song...

Yeah, I saw on the Ableton forum there was a thread where they were dissing hardware samplers. I almost chimed in but it was just too amusing.

I like Ableton and I use it too, but comparing it to an MPC is like comparing a screwdriver to a hammer.

Is it like ACID for a MAC?

what about latency, say if it's rewired to Reason or Logic?

I like it because you can take something you've done with the MPC (or reason, etc), record it as audio on your computer... speed it up slow it down add any VST effects and the great filters and effects that come with it.

So you write riffs on the MPC, and Ableton becomes like a sketch pad. I have a friend who was an old bass player in a band I used to play in. He sucks with a computer, but he's really good at composition, and in Ableton he was 'able' to compose some pretty interesting ideas.

You'll definitely take a CPU hit, depending on how many effects you use...

could rewire reason to ableton live3

i've used cubase sx with live and reason. it's good but it's software and not much fun.

using mpc with live is cool. also got a monomachine and future retro 777, both with inbuilt sequences synced to the mpc - mile more fun than software

For an MPCer Live is like a recording program for audio, take different loops you make in to live, combine them with other things, and have access to tons of different filters and effects.

The way Speedy J uses it is about exactly how I use it, sequence stuff, throw it in to live as an idea. Once you've got a whole bunch of ideas you can quickly arrange them in different ways.

It's fun, but you won't replace an MPC with it

(unless you are the type that just buys premade CDs and press play and call it a remix)
