when theres no turntable around to listen to the damn record. Yes i have a portable turntable, but i'm not carrying that f*cking weight with me all the time.

Miserable nerd record store owners, probably ain't had a girlfriend in years and are like comic book guy from the Simpsons. "Puuhlease do not scratch the records, they are worth a lot of money"

Stores with too much damn records in the rack. Now I can't just have a quick flick through now!

Guys with 60 something records at the listening post. Listening to every damn track.

OXFAM. What the **** is it with these twats? The shops are so overpriced! Do they think they gonna get loads of nerds with record collector manuals in store checking out their records? I'm not down with spending £10 at a charity shop unless the record is special or something i really need in my life.

Record stores that you go into for 1st time and everyone looks at you funny like you came to rob the store. It's like going on a f*cking bus and everyone gawps at you.

Store owners who don't have even basic customer service skills. Co-mon i serve people everyday with a smile on my face and politely. If you can't be friendly to a customer or serve them properly why the f*ck are you running a shop? Running a record store doesn't only require music knowledge you know.

Record store owners who seem to price records up on their 'samplebility' and whether the guys on the cover have afros or not. Anything that the young 'hip-hop generation' buys is put up in price.

add your own peeves.

stop whining,

Agreed. Enough record shop kiddies acting like fools.

Oh, no service with a smile? And you're not going to help me? Because you aspire to be some arrogant know-it-all and you don't want my business?!

Maybe that's why alot of shops in the UK are closing down (yes, alot of it is linked to the internet/iTunes etc). Maybe that's why Mr Bongo in Soho closed down?

Miserable c*nts!

And yeah, Oxfam is completely jumping on the fact that people dig for records, and some pay ridiculous sums of money for vinyl. But that doesn't mean all those copies of Barry f*ckin Manilow is somehow justified at a retail price of £10+!!!!! And it's not even VGC. The sleeve is covered in some old man's p*ss!

Cancer Research is also guilty. I go in most weeks to check the crappy crap records. Don't see much research going on in there. Just hippies wearing Vegetarian Clogs and old ladies drinking tea, trying to justify that £10 asking price for Arrival by ABBA.

What a joke. Cats in America have it SO MUCH better!

Finding something I've wanted for ages only to find that it's warped/scratched/generally abused. Finding a gem only to find some t*sser has theived the f**king vinyl out of the sleeve! :x

2nd the 'stores with so much vinyl crammed into a box that you have to pull each one out individually only to find it's more James Last/Nana Maskouri/Geoff Love.

Boot sales (and some charity shops) that don't know how to look after vinyl and have them laying down flat! Not only is it gonna f**k up the records but it makes it hard to look through them

You'll never get a bargain in Oxfam these days. They even have a few dedicated vinyl stores where all the good shit goes (at ridiculous prices). I find a lot of charity shops are catching on to the value of vinyl. I mainly dig at boot sales now.

We don't even have a vinyl shop in Oxford now. The last one closed down a few weeks ago 'cause the f**king council upped their rent again! Oxford used to be pretty good for vinyl, but the stores just don't make enough money to pay the astronomical rents.

Oh yeah, over-estimating your digging skills and getting home to find you have a bag full of shit!

asking at charity shops if theres any more vinyl out back and getting the response "yeah theres stacks of it - but they've yet to be [over]priced"

bah.

and yeah - finding the sleeve for something you've been after for ages is a killer. - theres a shop i go to to pay for premium shit and a couple of times in the last 3 months the record is lost behind the counter... they'll call me when it turns up they say...

oh - an innapropriatly labelled records - i was in a oxfam books and music and a record had "heavy funk brazillian fusion" stickered on it and went for a fiver. it was lounge music pretty much - no heavy, no funk... brazil yes...
that taught me.

Rookies?? i'm looking at this from a customer perspective. You don't need to be a pro collector to see bad customer service.

DJ's, collectors, nerds and beatmakers may DIG for records, but regular ass people in the street buy music.

Look at what i'm saying?

I meant scratched records as in handling of the records. Paranoid ass record shop owners paranoid about the handling of the record making the customer feel like shit because of it. If you don't like customers handling the records to check for condition then put all the records behind the counter and make them ask or make a nice notice where everyone can see it saying no handling of records maybe.

Even if the customer is wrong the staff must be as polite as possible. Not being a miserable twat because people know people. In manchester music lovers communicate a lot to each other and that one experience can leave a bad impression on your business. I will say to the other guy/girl "Don't go to that store the owners are stupid cunts" and they'll go to the other store accross the road.

When you run a shop a customer is a customer. Rookie or not. You could make a reccomendation to the rookie instead of promoting all this elitism.
I mean i work in fashion retail. In fashion retail a customer with money is a customer with money. You can't jump the line just because you work in fashion.

How is music retail different from any other retail? There are too many old men and young jokers running record shops who are just after money and are not in the slightest interested in customer service skills and keeping people happy. In some record shops i enter i have to wait AGES to get served becuase studenty twat at the counter is too busy talking to some sweaty geezer standing at the counter who isn't even a customer about last nights gig at the Apollo. I can't do that in my job! I'd get the sack! When place's busy it's "next please!"
Yes i go where the records are but if i'm not feeling wanted or the place is an absolute unfriendly, dirty shithole then it's bye byes to the customer and off to HMV.

Maybe more people would go to the record stores if there were more service with a smile and customer service knowledge. I think regular HMV people are sometimes scared of independent record stores because of the 'regulars only' feeling you get from entering the shop and browsing the racks.

Maybe running shops isn't for some people.

I hate when record store owners have tons of vinyl that's not for sale.

"Oh that's my personal collection", or "those are not for sale". WTF are they displayed in the store for then??

By ONE Tue Feb 12, 2008 2:58 am
The only thing that pisses me off when digging is finding the cover of a record you really want and looking inside and the record is either not there or it's a completely different record. I HATE that sh!t.

another whinge about oxfam -

i was in the drury lane branch and they had two rows of vinyl - most were out of sleeves or missing and anything worth a double glance was in terrible condition.
i spoke to the assistant and pointed this out and she looked at me like i was stupid - said words to the effect of "i dont care"
and still they expect people to pay £1/$2 for a record.

Thats what does me in about charity shops the most - they dont care about their stock but still they charge silly money for what they've got! ... and i WANT to spend money there cos its for a good cause (to the point that i dont mind coming home with 'gambles').
