I just tried updating my operating system to 1.2 in preparation for a flash card reader and the whole thing has gone crazy. The machine wont boot without the disk being inserted and when it does all i get is pages of random codes.

What's happened?

1.20 is for cf cards above 1gb or is it 2gb..?

you said;

"tried updating my operating system to 1.2 in preparation for a flash card reader"

So you don't even have a reader yet... Your still on floppy or zip, you should not have tried it yet. You should have stayed at 114, installed the mcd, stay at 114 if you plan on using a smaller cf card or update to 120 only if you plan on using the larger cf cards.

And make sure you use cf cards, many mcd users have problems with sd cards, there are alot of people on the forums who have had the sd card problem but no cf problems...

Put the floppy/zip drive back in, download a fresh 114 and install it again so you can get back to normal....

Only difference between 1.14 and 1.20 I noticed was that 1.14 can only handle partitions up to 512MB, while 1.20 handles partitions up to 1GB...

Yeah that's what I was trying to remember, your right, no added features or anything, that's it.....the end of the road for it, lol....

This is what I bought -

I seem to have sorted out the crash. I made another disk with the OS system on and it works okay again. Must have been a bad disk. Checked version on the MPC and it says 1.20

Should I return to 1.14 until the drive is installed?

Thanks guys.

If everything is working fine then stay there.

Me, I use 2 x 512mb cf cards from when I first installed my mcd drive, maybe 3-4 years ago, maybe longer, I can't remember....

I am on 114.....

The MPC is still asking for the disk every time I start up. Do I need to save the OS permanently to the flash memory? If so how do I do that?

I got an email from the company that I bought the drive from and they tell me it's going to be the end of the month before they have them in stock and can deliver. I'm starting to feel nervous about the whole thing now. I'm thinking I should revert to 1.14 just in case there's a problem and wait till I definitely have the kit. What's the deal with 1.20? Will a floppy not work with it? If so how come it can read the OS from the floppy disk on startup?

Okay, so I loaded 1.2 into the flash memory and it still asked for the disk on startup. I've now reverted back to 1.14 and flashed it and it loads fine. No disk request on startup. Guess I'm just gonna have to wait till this drive arrives. I think I was probably a little too eager! Can't wait for this cf drive. I only got a floppy drive, not even an external zip, hence I hardly use the machine for sampling. It's going to be a beautiful day.

It wasn't such a beautiful day after all.

CF drive arrived and so I went to installing it. Now the instructions that came with the drive say that I have to have 1.2 on the MPC so I flash it to memory. It then says that this is the time to swap the drive over, then to make sure a disk is in the drive when you switch on or it wont recognise the drive. This I do but then the MPC asks for OS system disk again. The drive is lit up so I guess that must be a good sign, but it wont do a thing without the disk.

So I swap drives again and give it the disk. Loads up 1.2. I've since tried the CF drive with 1.14 but when I do this the MPC says no floppy and can't see it.

Here's the damn thing -

Please somebody show me the way.

2kxl manual pg 153.

I'm pretty sure I tried that. When the MPC was running 1.14 and the CF drive was in, from the load page I selected setup and cycled through all primary drives. Nothing.

Would it make a difference if I had 1.2 on there, changed the primary drive then put in the CF? If so what drive do I select for a CF?

Do I have to have 1.2 on there like the site says? They insist it wont work.

Add info - The CF IS set to master like it should be.

Made a new OS disk. Flashed it and .... IT WORKS!

I knew it was going to work when it didn't ask for the disk on its first reboot. Put the CF drive in and there it is! All fine and dandy.

Thanks for the help. Turned out to be a beautiful day after all.

It's not so hard to try 3 little settings on each reboot is it?
