Do you hear how like every time the kick hits, or a drum hits the whole melody fades out a bit?

Does anyone know if this can be achieved with just the mpc and jj OS?

also, is there any way to do it besides setting the attack and release up really high on the melody?

he just mixed his drums way too high, and then added a lot of compression to the stereo mix to try to compensate.

to achieve this, just do exactly as i said. keep the level of your drums a lot higher than your melody, and then compress the hell out of the stereo mix.

its compresser pumping, "Still dre" is a good example of using it well

this is best done post composition in DAW, not in the mpc. it's a post production thang.

Probably sidechain compression, not possible in the mpc ( you could do it manually ... nah forget it)

Simple compression like mike suggested might work too.

i recently got alesis 3630 (super cheap but sounds ok) just for this purpose. works pretty well if you also have mixer.

yeah. sidechain compression.

used in house a lot, and some dnb production (think pendulum sidechain a lot to the snare...)

i use sidechaining in ableton. its an ace trick. only experimented on a basic level. get a dirty electro bass, add a drum track with just a kick, silence that track. add a compression effect to the bass, select side-chaining and select the drum track within the sidechaining options. (this is in ableton). add a second drum track which isnt silenced, preferably using the same drum kit. it will make the kick sound more prominant and sorta fades the bass out every time the kick is heard.

is a great tool to achieve this effect.
there is no need for a silenced kickdrum or else.
and also works if your daw does not support sidechaining.

works great for me.
