Can you bring your MPC to a record shop and sample there?

Hey, Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this before I try. Has anyone brought their MPC to a shop and sampled records there instead of buying? I was considering offering a payment if the owner is not down with me doing it for free, what do you think would be a reasonable offer? The reason why I'm wondering this is because I don't have turntables/mixer and dont have the money to buy them. I also don't have space for them in my pad even if I did have the money. I've got a mpc1000, so it shouldn't be a big issue dragging it along with me. I think I heard that Shadow used to bring his MPC to a shop in San Francisco to sample, and that's what gave me the initial idea. Feel free to give any feedback, I'm interested in the practicalities of doing this, but also people's opinions in general.

why dont you use a portable track recorder with good pre amps? save you the risk of walking round with your mpc, p.t.r are really cheap these days and have hours of memory, then sample back of that to ur mpc when your back home.
unless you just want to look cool with your mpc

That's a good idea, but would the recording quality be the same? Especially after recording it twice? I hear MPCs are known for their sampling which creates a distinct sound, I wouldn't want a digital clean sound or anything. Also, I have a 100gb hard drive in the MPC, so it's pretty much unlimited samples. The PTR would be great for grabbing samples covertly though. I'll consider it, but if I get the ok from an owner, I'll probably just bring the MPC. Not that much of a hassle, and as you say, much cooler (i'd actually feel a little nerdy standing in the corner with my toy looking 1000 to be honest)

my friends have been asked to leave or take their portable turntable back to the car at numerous record stores... id think that you'd have to be in pretty good with the store worker to get away with ANY type of recording of their product... what did you plan on doing anyways, hooking up your mpc to THEIR turntable instore, or bringing BOTH your mpc and your turntable!??!?!

lol if i walked into a record store and saw someone sampling off the stores turntable id be like wtf??? i doubt the owner will allow you to do that...maybe if you buy the actual vinyl he mite let you.

i never heard anything about shadow taking a sampler to a store to sample .as many records as he diggs ,i don't think he would stoop so low as to do this.

if you don't have a turntable and records then your in the wrong Field unless you sample digital files.

You can go to any pawn store and cop an old mixer for cheap . You might even find a decent turntable in the thrift store. Those will be the cheapest pieces in your set up.

I gotta agree with ede if I owned a shop there would be no way I'd let ya do it, it's kinda cheeky.

Like Mr guiness said get ya self a cheap turntable, a vestax portable is about $120 just save some pennys for a few weeks. Start collecting now thou so you got some stuff to play when you do get a table cos otherwise it'll drive you nuts when you've got a table and only 1 or 2 piece's of wax
