OK guys,

I am running out of ideas and patience. There is only so many times you wanna un screw the 18+ screws in order to get to the card reader.

I have bought a Compact Flash Drive (similar to this)

I bought it brand new off a guy on Ebay.

Here is what i did.....

I up graded My MPC 2000XL to the 1.2 O/S as deemed necessary by the instructions.
I attached the IDE ribbon cable to where my Zip drives cable was and then removed the old power cable for the Zip drive and replaced it with my new one.

I then connected my Card reader and placed the 32mb card that came with it in the reader.
I then proceeded to turn on the MPC and hit Shift + 3 to load the drive.
It has not registered at all and will not recognise the connection.

On the screen it says "F ROM" but nothing else. The other drives remain present, ie, SCSI 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 etc and floppy but of course these are empty.
There is no recognition of an Aptai connection.

I have un plugged, re checked my connections and the re checked them and the re tried the drive.
Again , no luck.

I put the internal zip drive back in to try that and that works no problem.

I also got a 1 gig card (blank) as i know thats the maximum XL's will allow. Again, it did not reconise it.
Note: the cards read on my PC.... just not on the MPC 2000XL

I am STUCK...... please help
(i have covered all the bases i think)

(EDIT:) i even gave the connections a magic blow !! even this did not work !!

I can only think a jumper not in the right spot or ribbon cable on backwards.

You should have stayed at 114 until you confirmed the thing works. I'm still on 114 w/ a mcd in my 2kxl. Never had a problem.

i might try the 1.14 as the MP is still open...
I'll hook up the zip again and do it now

(these things are set to try us) one thing i will say is that it gives you a better understanding of things when you take em apart and put back together.

ok , i just turned on with version 1.4

This is what i see on the screen

Device F-ROM
below this it says "No FROM" Fllash rom - LOAD

free memory -
snd - 32620k
seq - 2640

This time i have noticed that the green light is ON (on the card reader)
AND als, there is an orange light on now....Hmmmmm

I noticed on the IDE ribbon although they have the same ends they have a tiny marking on them that differs on both ends.
one end says "FC-40p and then really small in the corner "x" currently this is in the board
the other says "FC-40p and then really small in the corner "A1" currently this is in the card reader

i'll swap them over just to rule out another possibility

If the ribbon cable is backwards all the lights will remain on after power up.

There should be a red wire on one side of the ribbon, that red side should be towards the power connector.

i must admit, the red wasnt towards the power supply bit of the board. It looked awkward being that way though that is now rectified.
It didnt work but I am gonna put the zip back and go back to O/S 1.2 as the card reader stipulates this

thanks for the help thus far LampDog.. much appreciated

try putting the thing into your pc and see if it works.

did you check the jumpers on it? try all the combinations of the jumpers. different drives have different settings.

Try no jumper, try cs = cable select and lastly try ms = master

fingers getting cut up are the worst, I hate that shyt..

yo Lamp Deezy
Just got this from the people that sell them. Seems you two think alike, lol

Have you moved the jumper from pins 1&2 to 2&3 to set to master mode.

Also the power cable that was connected to the zip drive does NOT need to be connected to the Flash drive.

Let me know if this helps or not.

Regards

Andy

cheers dude, i'll clue my self up on it now and see what goes

Peace

There are probably two sets of jumper pins on the drive - the first two (up and down) are for Slave and the second two are for Master (normally there is some sort of labeling above these pins, maybe SL and MA). They mean move the jumper plug that is on the first two to the second two, setting the drive to Master mode.

I just love these "guess the install method" card reader threads!
