SO I was dissapointed to find that the metronome cannot be routed separately to headphones as I wished to have a reference point for playing along with some samples that tend to be a little metronomically ambiguous ( on purpose). Is the MPC the wrong machine for me? Anyone have any suggestions on how I might do this or what equipment I might be looking for that is not software/computer based? Software seerms too unreliable for my live purposes.

Make a metronome like hhat track and route it to one of the individual outs. From there you can solo that track in a mixer to headphones can't you (depending on the capabilities of the mixer).

If you use the JJ OS you don't even have to make the extra track since it gives you the option of routing metronome to any of the rear panel analog audio outs.
