MIDI dump performances...

I know you can do a MIDI dump of SND files from the 2000XL. However, say I have a track with MIDI notes recorded in the MPC, and I want to transfer that MIDI performance to my PC so I can play the MIDI notes back via a soft synth; is there a way to do that? I have searched long and hard to see if it's possible to do a MIDI dump for MIDI notes and I'm not sure what the answer is. If not, then how do you take a MIDI performance on an MPC track and record the MIDI notes on your PC? Any help is greatly appreciated...thanks.

Thanks Lamp, it would be pretty embarassing if I didn't know how to save a .MID file in the MP. But do you know if it's possible to transfer MIDI sequences through a MIDI cable in a dump?

A "dump" (in the midi sense, of course) means backing up the internal memory of a midi device by outputting it in system exclusive or sysex format that only that midi device can understand. Standard midi is not sent during a sysex dump. Even if the midi machine backs up it's stored sequence info this way, nothing but that machine will be able to extract the info when the data is in that format.

To move standard midi sequence info between different sequencers you either do what Lamp suggested and drop the .mid file into a sequence track, or sync the sequencers together and record from one to the other in realtime.

Thanks elektrik, you answered my question. Just out of sheer curiosity, what is the point of doing a MIDI dump then? I hear people talk about dumping from the Triton to the MPC, etc. I never quite grasped what the point of doing that would be.

That's so you can externally store the internal settings for backup purposes and/or if you've run out of internal memory and want to try a new config without loosing the old stuff.

Reading all your posts I think you can help me on the issue I'm having.

Currently I'm using a Midi keyboard connected to mpc 2000lx and I record midi tracks on the MP (using cubase 4 and VSTs, let's take trilogy as an example).
I end up with my sequence on the MPC (drum tracks and lets say 1 midi track (trilogy))

Now I want to sync the mpc with the PC (and I can do that having the MP as slave) an record the drum tracks to audio tracks on cubase 4 but I can't record the midi track I have in the MPC to a Cubase 3 midi track.

The notes don't "stay in the correct place". Image the signal is sent to the VST and the Cubase midi track detect is but when I try to record it it just dont record a MIDI sequence, the notes do not "form a loop"... You understand me?

I hope you can help me.
