The 1000 is an easier to use better laid out machine, larger screen, more features, and a sturdier feel. And on the used market you will only pay around an extra 150-200 for the 1000 as opposed to the 500 . I think the 1000 is one of the best MPC's ever made.

The small screen isn't a factor to you? If you've never laid hands on a MPC before it's quite a difference, actually.

The 500 was my first MPC. I've messed with other samplers in the past.
