issue loading or save via iomega scsi zip drive

ok so i was messing with my mpc...i had loaded some drums from the zip earlier in the day with no problem...then i went to save my work, the disk is pretty much full so i deleted a folder with useless sounds to make room. and then went to save my work and i got a disk error. i kept trying but no luck. then i went to get another drive i had laying around plugged it it. put the disk in and the same thing.

so i turn off the mpc losing my work oh well, maybe it would work when i turn it back on. tried to load from the disk again got "error" so then i figured the disk is f'd up. i went lookin for another disk put it in...it looked like it was detected. so i went to format (not sure if that was necessary), it said waiting and then "scsi not ready" for some reason. i put some sounds in the mpc via floppy and then switched over to the zip to save em the zip disk. i press "do it" and nothing happens.

so thats where im at right now...the zip drive seems to work. its detected but i cant save anything or load from the first disk i was using.

Does the zip drive sound different? Ever heard of the click of death?? Google for it.

well it clicks for a bit like it would normally when its about to read the disk ...IF thats normal. its always done that since i got it.

The "Click of Death" - when you insert a disk and the drive starts to spin up, it will make several noticable clicks as it tries to access the disk. If you hear that, stop - don't put anymore disks into the zip drive, as they can be damaged by the screwed-up drive.

But you said you tried two different zip drives, correct? It's doubtful they both would be bad, unless the second one you had laying around was already bad.

so those clicks are bad when it first starts to read the disk?

it shouldnt make ANY clicks?...i've used this drive for like a year. i thought that was normal. never had any issues with it not being able to read or save on the disk till just now.

i had it stored away for quite sometime though and i was messing with it to make sure everything was cool with the mpc before i sold it to cop a mpc 1000. so i guess the zip drives are bad?

both zip drives appear to do the same thing...so what happens with this "click of death" does it just make you lose your data or ruin the disk completely?

when i was trying with the first zip drive a couple time it would not even detect the zip drive.

The click of death is a different sound than zip drives normally make. In my experience, when the drive develops the CoD, it is very noticable. The unit makes a loud click and does it several times as the heads attempt to align but cannot. Continuing to try and use a zip disk in a drive that has developed this problem can destroy the alignment tracks, rendering the disk unusable in any other drive without a full reformat.
