2000xl Pad problem HELP!!!(newbie)

hello to all....ive owned my 2000xl for about 5 years now.
Pad 4 on the bottom right hand side, doesnt seem to work at all.
Ive hardly ever used it, because i had other machines that i would use as well.
That said, i have always tooken great care my 2000xl i got it brand new right out of the box, never dropped it or abused it. It got dusty a few times but i always cleaned it off.
Ive asked around on other forums about this pad problem and everyone either said that i needed new censor pads or to come here and ask you all.
I wasnt aware that pad malfunctions were so common in the 2K model, but now i suppose after reading some of the inquiries on this forum it seems quite typical!
That SUCKS pretty damn bad.

i also read through a reply here saying that its possible to clean the inside of the pad sensor sheet with a lint free cloth and that should make the pads/pad respond again?!?!

I just dont want to tear into it though, im afraid i might screw something up internally.
Is their some sort of step by step how to instruction sheet that i could print off???
Or some sort of procedure i could do to test all the pads before i tear the machine open??

AGAIN the only pad not working is pad no. 4.

that sounds as if you may need real professional technical assistance .. i would take it to a certified repair person ..just to be on the safe side.

yeah your probably right.
But, who should i take it too?
Do you think guitar center would have someone?

one more thing to add....i was just using my 2K like 4 months ago and the damn thing was working just fine....including pad 4.

I dunno like i said, i dont see how the sensors could be worn out already!?!?

If I rememebr correctly, if your pad 4 sensor went bad, then it wouldn't work in the other 3 banks also (B,C,D).

Try this...

From the main screen, hit SHIFT + 5 (TRIM) then SHIFT + F1
Click on MEMCHK,
Click on PADCHK,
Here you can tap on all pads in all banks to see the velocity and even check your note variation slider.
See if you are getting any response from your pad 4.

it might not be a pad sensor problem. i had simillar issues, with a whole line of pads not responding and when i fixed those(get to that in a minute) pad no 4 stopped working.

the thing that was wrong with it was the cable/tape that is connected to the sensors, it has to be put in even or straight or scrait. just mess around with the tape, it has 16 cables in it, and the case might be that your no 4 is no making its way into the board.

if that is not the issue then you are most likely ****, as in d1ck in the ass, pad sensor in the trash ****.

yeah i did the pad check thing....and its just pad number 4.
Again though, im really hesitant to try to open it up myself.
I suspect that the pad sensor sheet might of gotten dusty or something?!?!

it seems like akai started using inferior materials when they started making the 2K
Pad problems and the such dont seem as prevalent in MPC's prior to the 2K.

ok heres your real answer. there is no way to clean the pad sensor sheet. it is a sealed sheet. not a button. there are 3 things that would make your pad four not work.
1. pad is overused or abused and just plain worn out.
A. replace the sensor sheet from vst or mpc-stuff. $75+s/h

2. ribbon from sensor sheet to main pcb has a crack in it.
A. replace the sensor sheet from vst or mpc-stuff. $75+s/h

3. ribbon from sensor sheet is not seated properly into pcb socket.
A. remove your front panel then cover and check the termination of the ribbon.

again though check banks b,c,d to see if the problem is not only on bank a. if you want to send it for service then contact vstservice.com

I do think that it might be a ribbon problem, although ive owned my 2K for 5 years ive probably only used it 10 good times, so it cant possibly be worn in already.

And the pad doesnt work at all on any bank i select.

I popped in a disk went to load a sample, and as i was pressing the pads to assign the sample i hit pad 4 and it worked!
Only momentarily though, and only when i hit it that once.
I turned the machine off and on and repeated that process a good two to three more times, and its back to normal again...the pad isnt responding.

Maybe it is the connecting ribbon.

just take the top off and check it. its not likely your giong to mess anything up by looking at it.

yeah, i was talking about the ribbon thingy, not the sensors, yes?

okay, im going to open it up myself to check out the ribbons.
It looks rather simple, screws on the side and back.
But is their a particular way to go about opening the thing up, if someone could post up some step by step instructions that would help me immensely.
