good records to sample snares?>

^^^truth....and to expand even further, I never really truly understood why folks always say use compression.....most cats I know who own compressors dont even know how to use 'em......

well its a bit pointless them owning them imo....

if you dont undestand how to use compression how could you ever hope to use it effectively?

the best records to get snares sounds are records of great drummers, like return to forever (lenny white and jerry brown), billy cobham, harvery mason, tony william, phil collins, f it get a michael jackson record they most likely will have the best samples you ever heard. just a thought.


basically, grab any sampled snare sound and process it (filter, eq, compression, distortion, flanger, etc) and make it yours. finding a great snare sound is not a show stopper. the key is where you place it in the mix and the feel in which you program it in your music. i never listen to a record and said wow that snare is amazing. what i do listen for is how the snare sound pops in the mix.

the problem with great drummer records is they **** play too much, all sorts of toms and shit everywhere, hard to find open shit on a billy cobham record...

that is so f*cking true about bill cobham. you actually made me laugh but there some song that are not that bad. that sh&t is funny because he is very fast. check out "pocket changes" and "oplusious lady" from the magic album i think. those are two funky song that your could chop up. by the way randy jackson from american idiol plays bass on the bill's magic album.

Compression is important for this sh*t... Compressors are oftne used horribly though... Many people don't know how to use them and that's a shame... If u get it down though, you'll realize how essential it is to makin your drums bang...

That being said... ieism has a real good point... There's no point in doing any of this unless you have a good sound to work with in the first place... Layer snares with snares of different frequencies using the MPC's Freq. Filters... Layer Snares with hi-hats for a little extra initial presence... Layer snares with a light Clap sound that cuts through the mix... If u do this right the clap will actually blend right in with the snare... This is real good for some Dark Downtempo and Trip-Hop sh*t....

The key here is experimentation.

Layer with your mpc.

mpc tutors sample packs will for sure have what you are looking for. Id go for one of the breaks pack, in the "vintage" archive, because theyve got compression, mastering etc. done to them just like real breaks, so they should have that punch you desire.

Plus you want your snares to have characteristic.....I think snares sound better from breaks. more layers, and flavor wraped up in them.

kicks on the otherhand, i usually like plain or clean....but whatever floats your boat.

Got some dirty snares off of a few of Queen's albums. Got some from James Brown, Micheal Jackson's Billie Jean, Grover Washington Jr, Sonny and Cher, Tommy Roe, The Doors, Sly and the Family Stone or just plain jack them from songs that are out right now. I have no shame when it comes to that.

if you want a snare that bangs, id go to the rock section. you dont need a break. listen to the beginning of the song, a lot start with a snare fill.
