The manual should be your best friend for the first few weeks/months. Almost everything you need to know is in there, it might just be a little hard to find.
And now for the basics:
You can save either to a floppy drive, a zip drive or a hard drive. You can NOT save to a cd-r drive directly from the mpc!!
When you save you have to save two different files - one for the sampler and one for the sequencer. The easiest way to do this is to
-SAVE ALL SEQUENCES AND SONGS .ALL
and
-SAVE ALL PROGRAMS AND SOUNDS .APS
(and remember to replace existing sounds when you save!)
If you are planning to shift the sounds from the mpc to the computer, you must keep the names under 8 characters.
MIDI will not transfer audio, it is strictly data.
Sampling in mono will give you double the sampling time vs stereo sampling.
When you have a sample and you want to put it to a pad, open up the PROGRAM window (shift + program). From here you can assign sounds to pads and change the characteristics of the pad.
Learn about Drums, Programs and Sounds and how they should be used. It might seem a little hard at first, but at the end of the day it's really simple.
An oldie but goodie, from Lampdog: Go through the MPC with your manual in front of you and press every button on the machine to see what it does. (If an option comes up to delete all your sounds you obviously don't need to delete them, but at least you'll know where it can be done). Also try to press OPEN WINDOW on everything. You'll be surprised at the amount of sub-menus there are.
