Gotta give kudos for a really interesting project, but I'm not feeling the screen being so far from the buttons - although that's maybe just me, because I don't and can't operate the MPC completely eyes free - I prefer to see the screen changes as soon as I hit a key. If I was to use this design I'd keep having to refocus my eyes from the buttons up to the screen and so forth.

That's not criticism, just offering a different perspective - Obviously it suits your workflow.

Huge respect for taking this on.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pics.

maybe you could find a busted 2000XL on ebay for cheap and transfer the 1000 guts and the MPD pads over into the case, then create a new front and back panel to accommodate for the difference in I/O and the CF slot.

what you actually do have in mind though is very ambitious and sounds pretty awesome in a mad scientist kind of way

also, props for deceiving Akai with the fake name and story

and yeah - definitely drop the MPC moniker altogether

it should be the JJ OS Production Center XL, or JPCXL for short

Hey guys, i think i might make my own version of that akai pad fix pcb and build an MPC1000XL too!!! the pcb shouldn't be a difficult thing now when we have the official schematic and all, thanks to nym :)

there's only a few components on that board and they cost virtually nothing. a manufactured pcb will be the most expensive part, but you could do it easily yourself by etching, too. of course, if there's enough interest, a batch of high quality pcbs won't cost too much.

what you people think?

i don't know much about this kind of stuff past a general surface component knowledge. do the microcontrollers on the AC1A have to be burned with a certain interpretation code?

this might be too big of a hassle for too small a reward, but if you could come up with a PCB, folks could bypass the akai pad fix completely in favor of using MPD16 sensors in their 1ks.

all the resistors on that board are the small, no-pin surface mount type, but regular thread-n-bead resistors work just as well of course.

power to you. it's a shame that the pad fix costs in the realm of 200 dollars. i enjoyed bypassing all that (and the nice thing about the mpd16 is that once you take it apart just for the sensors, you end up with a decent slide potentiometer and also set of 4 nice tact switches/buttons, as well as a gaggle of resistors and capacitors)

I've worked in IT for almost 10 years now and have been a part of a few very innovative companies (Electronic Medical Records, SEIM, DLP etc.) Someone like you is exactly what these types of organizations don't have enough of.

The AC1A doesn't have any microcontrollers. So no code, no worries.

The integrated circuits on the board are:

2 x 74HCT4051

1 x 74AHC541

1 x 74AHC00

The price for each is way under 1 $. They all are very basic stuff and can be ordered from any electronic component supplier, mouser for example. The connectors may be a little bit more expensive.

I could design a pcb and make instructions for building it. This board is SO simple really. Will take an hour or two to design it. I assumed the AC1A would have been much much more complicated with really expensive components. I can't really understand where the 200$ comes from...

A rough cost estimate for the final AC1A clone board: 20 $ max. Might be less, probably not more.

How many people need to show interest for this project to be worth your while?
Cause I'm sure there is quite a few people here, (and more) that haven't bought the pad fix yet because of the hefty price tag.

P.S. I'm in! 8)
