Hey, wondering if the akai style of direct record (punch in) has been added to any of the jjos udates?? i.e.2xl?

My first instrument is bass and i'm missn the way i could punch in bass lines over the beat while it was playin. I've only done the switch to jj about a month ago and havent really gone deep on the audio track recording functions/capability, so if it's just as easy as the akai -my bad!

I'm using the free version for the 2500 at the mo and will upgrade when i get some $$.

cheers.

Why? What's different?

I'm going to upgrade to os2 soon as I have the cash

i completely disagree. i've given multiple reasons time and time again for why the akai style direct record is better than the crappy audio tracks.

well i guess we can agree to disagree. i always hated direct record, hated the fact that all you really do with it is sample on the main page....then you have to make a new program and a bunch of other garbage. i use audio tracks for guitars basses scratches and all types of other stuff. damn near got a 32 multi track recorder IMO.

but hey maybe i missed the boat on it, why did you like direct record?

Muied Lumens wrote:Audio tracks exist in the free JJ as well. Look at track 61-64.

In free JJ OS there are 4 audio tracks, in OS 1 there are 8 and in OS 2 - 32

cheers, yep found where they were, just not how to use them propa. I've only tried them once so far but found that when i auditioned a live bass part (while the seq played), it also rec the beats that were playin to the bass track.
Pretty sure that the akai version would just rec the bass part to the assigned track although the seq was playin...
is it still poss to do this in the free version (3.08)?

At this stage, i gotta agree with you mike. Although i'm feelin all the added features of the jj (even in this down-graded free versn!), i'm def missin the direct record ease and capability. Guess i just gotta get my head round how the audio tracks work, coz right now they're a bit counter intuitive...

Thought there may have been word from the jj developer/s about this since it seems that the peeps who knew this function from the akai os are def keen to see it added to the jj.
Granted there's prob a million features bein asked/begged for, this was def a bonus when i got my own mp.

Direct record suited what i'm doin coz i play the instruments in live and just make the beats on the mp...

I could set a beat goin and audition different instruments on the fly, regardless of where i was in the loop. There was no need to think about where the loop started or ended in regards to the recording.
Assigning the recording seemed pretty straight forward as i would just edit it in trim, save as a sample (assign it to a pad in the relevant prog) and then trigger the pad it was assigned to (in the seq) where i wanted it.

I'm still figuring out the jj audio tracks so apoligies if they work in a similar way. My understanding of them at the mo is that the recording will stop at the end of the loop?? Although i think i read that there is a way to get around this... a complicated way from memory!!

direct record is not only sampling from the main screen... it also allows you to assign that sample to a pad in your program, and then assign a note-on event to your sequence so that your sample gets triggered in sync with the beat as you sampled it.

this is superior to the JJ audio tracks because:

1. direct recorded samples work in song mode whereas JJ audio tracks don't.
2. you can direct record a sample as your sequence loops back to the beginning. you cannot do this with JJ audio tracks, it will either extend your sequence, or it will begin a new audio track sample starting at the beginning of your sequence.

the only advantage that the JJ audio tracks have is that if you hit play after the start of your audio track sample, it will play the sample in the middle instead of waiting until the sequence hits the beginning of the sample again, but that is exactly what Continuous Sample Track was for in the Akai OS, so having direct record with Continuous Sample Track negates the only advantage that audio tracks have.
