I have a blue one. I still have to get the new pads, but the one's I have are working just fine. Hell, you can the blue one (don't pay over $500 for it, unless it has the new pads) and upgrade it to JJ OS, new pads (if needed), and get a black case for it and boom! Black MPC and fully upgraded.

All in all if done right, you should be out no more than $700-$750 at the most.

Either way it's better than buying it from the store for a Grand.

Which is $200-250 more than the black ones are going for used.

Blue = old pad set, unless original owner has upgraded. If you are buying it second hand from the original owner, they should know if it has the new pads or not. They would have installed them.

The pads seem to be the only issue with the older blue or black machines. The pad issue usually isn't something that just happens out of the box. I knocked around on mine for a few years before it became a problem.

If you are at all unsure, buy new. zzounds has b-stock and open box that usually come with the warranty (black case = yes, new pads = maybe). If you want to purchase a used one, I usually find some pretty good deals on craigslist and have had limited success on e-bay... try purchasing from the used gear on this site, you can usually find somebody that has all the upgrades for a reasonable price.

I would buy the least expensive unit available, regardless of the pad set (just make sure they all work) and color. Later, when you figure out if it was a good investment for you, spend the $ for the pad upgrade when you need it. I would purchase JJOS before a pad fix.

yup! Pads...

It doesn't matter what color as long as it has the new pads!

Maybe, but I almost bought a used Black 1k for $775 that had new pads, JJ OS2. I was ball parking.

Funny part is if you look at eBay people are asking more for the blue 1ks than the black ones.
Me personally I'm still not sold on the idea of the new pads.
The only problem I ever had with the 2500 was those false triggering pads and if they didn't change them the 1k's with the pad upgrade are going to eventually do the same thing.
With the 2500 it took us almost 18 months for it to start.
One thing for sure you can't get that false trigger with the old style 1k pads because of their individuality.
I guess time will tell if that frame and sensor structure of the kit is better than the one in the 2500.
It was hard to tell since the 2500 is gone.

^ it's my most informed decision the issue with the 2500 is caused not by a hardware problem but rather a poor sensor calibration. this is a software issue rather than a hardare issue.

the difference between the 2500 pads and the 1000 pads (upgraded) is that in the 1000 pads there's a 1mm gap in between sensor and rubber. this doesn't exist in the 2500. as a result, due to a too-low note on threshold in the stock os, some 2500s may sense pressure on notes when the frame/othehr pads are pushed upon. this can be fixed with a proper sensor calibration...

i may be wrong and there might be more wrong under the hood - it wouldn't surprise me, because it wouldn't have been the first time - but so far so good on my 1k with the akai pad fix.

Hey Nym,
You can simply disassemble the 2500, see the difference as well as see a way to make it stop.
It is not based on calibration BUT you could actually recalibrate it to make the problem go away if you are willing to accept a decrease in the responsiveness of the pads.
It's pretty much like a car with bad shocks on a bumpy road.
Recalibration would be like repaving the road so the bad shocks don't have to deal with the bumps instead of repairing the suspension.
If you open other MPC's and compare the metal frame that the pad sensor are adhered to you will notice on the 2500 the metal felt thinner and more flimsy.
I had gotten rid of my 2500 so the recently acquired 500 and 1000 weren't in my possession to do an actual comparison of the metal so I can't sign off on it being better.
Thus the reason I say time will tell.
