Imagine if everybody sampled lil jon, then claimed it as their own. It just wouldnt work, so even though you can cross some boundries, it doesnt apply to them all! so sampling a sample might be acceptable in some instances, like, a drum sound or something(only if you flip it afterwords).....sampling a whole beat, or main sample is just plain cheating(referring to someone elses hiphop song).
The whole point of diggin is finding your own shit.....and also part of it, is finding what someone else has...but knowing when to use it if you do. Part of finding your own shit, is also not knowing what someone else has used, so in a case you find the same sample pete rock has used, you still flip it your own way because you dont have a guilty concious, and have the satisfaction of knowing you found it for your self.
if i come accross a sample "i know for a fact" that someone else used, i probably wont use it, unless i really know how to flip it better than they did. I GAURENTee ive sampled something someone else has, but i dont know it, and i dont flip it the same way, but thats the point, if you know it, then you are biting. IF i get a sample the same time as someone else, and dont know it, its not biting.
But when it all comes down to it, whether i use the same samples as someone else, i always get them from my own source, not thier own song! thats biting and cheating, and lame.
There is a differance between sampling a 70s break, and someone elses hiphop song. its called paying dues.
