yep theres to many variables to say that any of this is true. It all comes down to Millseconds in the end. but i luv the quirks of old gear, thats what give it its character. the point made earlier about using a grapical waveform display VS by ear Trimming, you hit the nail on the head right there.

Someone made the point that the swing settings are different on a 60/3k vs. 2k,1k,etc...
And I'm sure it's probably true that if you set for instance a 3k to a swing of 64% and did the same for say 1k that the swing would in fact sound different. But my point is I usually adjust things like swing to taste, so if a 3k's swing sounds good to me at 64% and a 1k's swing sounds good to me at 60%, then they could very well be the same swing but I'd never know it because I'm not checking one against the other, I'm simply checking for it's effect on the rhythm.

No modern sequencer is stopping you from programming drums with good 'swing.' If you're relying on quantization to make your drums sound good that's not the machine's fault; it's there to correct mistakes not to insert its own creative touch. Program with different quantization depending on what you're doing and think about your programming before you hit the pads. That's much better than putting your faith in some imaginary sequencer fairy.

that takes us back to the original point! the sp1200 has the same resolution as the mpc1000/2000/2500

sounds like what's needed is some groove templates in the [SEQ EDIT] menus ...
so you can apply pre-set midi templates - also being allowed to create your own midi templates
would be - very cool.

also a humanise function to randomise notes by a few ticks .... you set the depth - then hit do it
creator/notator on the atari st used to have this. it was great.

That sounds perfect. My timing is pretty bad, even though I have rhythm, somehow when I hit the record button it all goes out the window. I end up Quantizing quite a bit, or even step recording. Making things a little stiff at times. This would be a great way to make things sound more naturally very quickly...

though a humanize function sounds great, this really sounds like a job for quantize strength instead - way more controlled magnetism than the randomness of humanize.

cosign on this. quantize strength i'll never use but a 'humanize' feature i would use ALL the time. even just to fukc with a beat by using it multiple times over and over to see what interesting / odd rhythms you could get.

i would like to see it implemented just by dialing in a NEGATIVE number for quantize strength - so a positive number moves events towards the grid while negative number moves events away from the grid.

any mpc should be about the richness of well implemented features ... then it's up to the skill of the user to inject part of their
personality into their music. though not essential, having good set of tools makes that job easier.
the rest is down to opinion - and opinions are like arseholes everyone's got one.
