quantize hip-hop

hi im new to the MPC world and i jumped feet first in the 5k... im some what familiar with my boar i bought the G6 but i want to know what you usually set the quantize on for a hip hop track cause for some reason i dont know why but its easier to quantize on the g6 ... thank you o and one more question for the new update... i have to put it on a card? i cant just throw it on the hard drive correct>

Welcome to the 5k family. Quantizing for hip hop does not have a specific setting. You have to try it for yourself.

Press F1
Select Swing and Move the wheel
Take some time to Record some drum sequences and listen to them, then change settings and repeat the same process again and again, you will get familiarized with the settings.

Regarding the OS update, yes you need a CF card. If you load it directly on your hard drive it won't update.

like the man said depending on the tempo of the sample and the sample swing its always going to be a differnt swing setting on the mpc. Iv'e never had a problem where i couldnt find the right swing setting so know that there always will be a perfect match. you just gota play around with it. after a couple months youl be able to play the mpc like a instrument and can experiment with doing your drums with out quantize, this would be a step forward in capturing your unique sound

I prefer quantize off.

I prefer a mixture of using quantize on and off depending on the instrument. The MPCs swing is the most sought after feature in hardware and software sequencers. MPCs set the standard. All the other companies go to great lenghts to duplicate the MPC swing. With quantize turned off, you can't use the MPCs swing.

Word What I usually do for kick, snare and hats is :
1-The first kick note I always record with swing set at 16th/50% and the coming variations I record off to give me that swing sweetness and live feel.
2-Snares, I vary a lot and very often I quantize OFF.
3-Hats, first one quantized at 50% swing to the right. Second and main one quantized off a little bit to the left.

I usually use 57% quantize on most percussion hits.
it just works for me.

Thanks man. So in essence t.c is quantize ... Ya I got plenty of questions I haven't read the book all the way tho cuz I been workin 14hrs a day LOL not enough hours in the day for me... So I promise before I ask I'll read the book. I got one other question tho ... If I want my hi hats to have the down south feel how would I do that?

Depending on the tempo set the T.C. to 1/16 or 1/32. Then while recording the track hold down the pad with the hat sample and the note repeat.
