The 1000 only chops the left channel of a stereo sample. Many older recordings have a wide stereo range, so you might miss some instruments that are only audible in the right channel. That might cause the quality loss you're talking about.

do you know if this is the case with the other mpc's?...like the 2500?

I'm confused now.

In the trim field of the 1k, you can only view left or right but not both channels of a stereo sample at the same time correct?
That's the same with my 2kxl.

In the trim field of the 1k, AFTER you chop and save your stereo sample the sample is STILL stereo correct?
If so, that's the same as my 2kxl.

...or is the end result automatically reduced to mono?

I find that hard to believe coming from an official Akai OS, unless that bootleg OS is doing this.

I'm speaking of the 2500 now, as it is virtually the same as on the 1000 as far as I know.

Correct.

After you chop it, you can still see left/right channel, yes. After you convert it to Sliced Samples or Patched Phrase, only the left channel remains however, no matter what you do. That is explicitely stated in both the 1000 and 2500 manual. I think you cannot even split the channels into two separate samples after recording them. There was some workaround for chopping stereo samples as well which I don't remember at the moment.

Addition:

You can extract each Region manually to a stereo sample after chopping. Just the automatic conversion only takes the left channel. I have no idea why.

I cannot believe i didint hear anyone complain bout this in my weeks of research of the mpcs...I seriously thought that i was doing something wrong the quality seemed to change so much...Man,,I have the ver 3.0 OS, but im certain it was doing this with 2,1.

Stilo...how do you manualy assign the regions?...and how much longer does it take you? Man,,,i might be copping an MV afterall,,,,and i was REALLY staritin to love this machine.. :(

That is exactly what I thought, thank you, I knew I wasn't going crazy. I remember reading in the 2500 manual that patched phrase did just what you described, but spaceaged was asking about the 1k. That's why I asked in specific detail. Thank you.

When you have a region selected after chopping, you can press Edit and select Extract. Then this region gets extracted as a new (stereo) sample. And that's what I don't understand, I don't see why the automatic conversion can't do this. A definitive Must for a next update.

If you chop it into 8 or 16 pieces, you can imagine about how long the procedure takes, including the assignment of the samples to a program. Not too much of a problem if you're used to the machine, but no comparison to just hitting two buttons.

yep...i figured it all last night...I really dont understand why this happens....It seems like it would be pretty simple to do this. I also compared a manual chop to one i auto'd and they are exactly half the size :( so they are indeed being force mono'd :(

somone should throw this "problem" to JJ and maybe he could change it in the final of his OS...

What about if you are just importing a sample instead of recording and chopping on the 1000?
