Utilizing AKAI SYS with two 4k's

Before I attempt to do this, my friend left me with his 4k so that I might be able to organize his files and folders properly. I was thinking of hooking up both units so that I may add some of the kits to mine that he's got on his. In theory, it seems like it should work. Has anyone achieved this before or is this a waste of my time?

Seems like a long drawn out headache with minimal returns.
Open it up take the drive out and put it in a case or in a computer.
You will then be able to move all the files at arate that makes sense.
AkaiSYS is not the answer for bulk movement.
You could easily re-arrange the files on his drive or another drive to clean them up.
I used AkaiSYS to back up a drive once and life is just too short to put that much time into something like that.
It's cool for PGMs and such but drive backup I'll pass on.

Also it's funny this is one of the few things the 1k/2500 beat the 4k out on and that's being able to directly access the internal drive form your computer for file maintenance or movement.

Yea, I know it's slow because of the usb 1.0 technology, I just need a few of the program kits he's got on it. The previous owner had sh!t jumbled all over the place on this thing (who was a drummer from what I heard), but I found it to have some dope stuff. But thanks anyway dawg.

Probably because of usb 2.0 maybe.

It's just because it runs in Slave mode not Host, similar to a Digital camera.

Then I would just use a card reader to transfer them from one 4k to the other.
Still better, faster and safer than AkaiSYS.

I use ak.sys to back up exclusively...(and weekly or more)....used to burn CD's ......but why? What's the big problem with ak.sys? You drag, you drop.....then dump it to your machine......if it's too slow, go have lunch.........

theoretically you should be able to hook them both up.....

I don't have any problems backing up my drive with aksys.....I also don't sit and watch a backup.....I don't even do that with computers at work....watching a backup is like watching paint dry or watching water boil, I do it when I'm done and don't plan on doing anything else wit the 4k at the time....

You guys have got to be joking.
AkaiSYS as the method to backup is just time wasted.
Nothing wrong with something taking time if it's necessary but in this case it's not.
I have an external USB drive that matches the internal drive in the 4k.
I save to both whenever I save then I can also copy the USB drive to FW drive.
That's (3) 160G versions of the same drive in less than 1/8 of the time it would take AkaiSYS to copy the drive and possible fault out.

But if AkaiSYS works as a backup method more power to you.

hahaha, well, I guess to each his own, everything that is on my 4k starts on my pc first, I have a exact copy on that hard drive....I load to that first then to the 4k, so I don't need to backup often, only after making a few songs...doesn't really take too long, but like I said, I don't sit there and watch it.....it's just a habit from work, i'm used to backups taking a while, backing up servers and such.....

it's all good though....I do want to get an external drive that's faster....

Well, my verdict is...yea, it works fine. Of course I was selective on what folders I wanted transfered, I saved that folder to my DAW's HD so I could edit or rid the unwanted stuff before I did any further transferring. It's not neccessary to dump everything to the computers HD, even though the process was pretty quick anyway, I thought it saved a lot of time. The only gripe I have is...my boys unit disconnected twice without any provocation. Plus I noticed it omits static noise occassionally if it's left on and not used for a minute or two (I wonder what that is all about). Oh well...back to the lab.
