Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

What up yall, I'm trying to step up my sampling quality, right now I'm just running a bare bones sampling connect from my turntables to my DJ mixer to my Soundcraft Spirit to my MPC/EII. But I recently peeped some other dudes studio who makes really nice beats, and he got like three joints inbetween his DJ mixer and his mixer/mpc. Im thinking of doing the same thing, but I aint no engineer so I need some assistance and I aint running to dude cause we kind of competitors if you know what i mean, what would be a nice combo, I was thinking this in this order...

1. Parametic EQ
2. Gate
3. Filter (like a FilterFactory)
4. Maybe a Chorus pedal...
5. Compressor (just to add some sheen on the top)

Does this sound cool, anybody else fukin wit this.

I sample everything clean, dry and usually with out any EQ, but sometimes I will route a kick i made on a board thru a tube pre before sampling. You can always get nasty after its sampled. This way you can tweak till your hearts content. To imporove your sampling front end you should actually remove excess gear in your chain because that will add extra noise.

Im not talking about wetting up the samples with FX, im talking aobut molding them. As far as the noise, ur right, but I guess thats why a gate would be in the chain, maybe at the end.

The gate will only remove what is before and after the thresh hold you set and do nothing to reduce the noise floor. If you want to reduce noise floor and hissing, the only thing that I heard works is SOAP, Resoration, and Clean. I never played with any of them.

As far as molding the sound... I wouldnt do it untill I am ready to track or mix, especially filters and chorus's. But hey, its up to you :)

yeah, im not to into fiddling with tracking and all that DAW stuff. so i want to get down right of the bat. right on for the knowledge on the gate.

ive been sampling straight into the mpc, and my triton....all my drums in the mpc, and all my instruments into the triton.

Ill seq out my drums, and then sample my instruments into the triton. Then ill lay the bassline down with my dummy program on the mpc(generic bass multisample with midi corresponding)....when im done sequencing the bassline, ill switch the drum2 to midi, then find a bass on the triton.

Then ill flip my instrument samples in the triton, add effects, filter, tune, etc. in the triton.....if i need to timestretch, then i may sample into the mpc instead.

this way i have plenty of outs for all my shit...when i track, i mess with eq. But all molding and shaping happens inside my gear, except eq when tracking. I actually dont use a dj mixer, because i control the triton from the mpc, so i can preview my drums and turntable simaltaneously because i sample most vinyl into the triton, and my drums are in the mpc.

maybe if you want more tools for sound shaping, check out a rack sampler....this is why i use the triton because it has effects that i like to use.8 outs might help you too, because you can sample clean, then run your sample through to an eq to shape it, or a filter/efx box. I think its best clean, so you can always go back.

get a patchbay rack, and 8 outs. then run your outs to the patch bay, you can then patch to whatever rack unit you want, or even chain the racks together.

If you wanna make gully music, you have all you need. All that nice stuff should not impress you one bit. If your friend is any good with the tracks, he will tell you it all takes time. The main secret to making a hot track is time.. some friend that I have gotten to know just kept their heads in the MPC for a year or two, or three, or four.. it's all depends how bad you want 'it.' You don't have to listen to me tho, but I'm telling you the truth, you don't need anything more than an plain mpc (you don't even need effects, 8-outs, or the 32 megs of ram!) a sound module/keyboard, cd/turntables, and a way to record it.. if you only have a tape deck, your straight, if you only have 1 speakers from your dads basement, your fine..The worst setup can bring out the best in you because you will find a way to make it sound better.. who needs compression when you can (1) sample, and (b) when you sell a track, make the artist take your music to the studio to get tracked properly.
You have a good home pre-production studio..you can make platinum hits with it! straight-up!

damn b. thats alot of info for a simple question.lol.

but uh, ive actually been thinking of getting an outboard eq, a little cheap one to put inbetween my MPC and mixer, id take the compressor out unless you really know what your doing.

yo ,mek de rastaman give yu some blood clat hints yeah, like scratch perry i blow ganja smoke on de desk , and de mpc seen, you have to give it a vibes, you get me.
no not really, seriously get a nice preamp like a tube preamp, focusrite , b4 it goes into the mp.
forget the gate.( completely)
forget the chorus
forget the flter
forget the eq
***********************BEFORE the sampling stage, have them to tweak after not before. a tube comp would be nice, but as said earlier, u better know what what yur doing. and maybe an aural exciter, bbe sonic maximer or even better if you got the loot. a tc electronics finaliser. tht sh*** works F**** magic. of course you could do all this in software for a third of the price. but u sound like a hardware dude. thts why i drop it like this.
all you want is the highest, cleanest uncoloured sound, with the best signal to noise ratio.
also your decks, make sure u got a proper stylus, and the counter balance is set more positive.
for your dj mixer, there might be better phono pre amps out there tht will give better sound quality check it out.

so

decks----phono preamp-----tube pre amp------mpc-----= sample
sample------- tube compressor---------tc finalizer or maximiser.

if u got balls and patience you can be like Mcgyver
http://members.nuvox.net/~zt.robgrow/ci ... la-2a.html

then u blow the ganja smoke on de mix seeeen

Dont us a finalizer or exciter unless you are a mastering engineer ...

I personally as a producer I hate anyone who uses exciters or finalizers..
Reason being is not choice it has to do with the high freq cycle that when..
Anyhting recorded with the exciter is slowed down you will hear a loud high pitch cycling freq..

So for samplist wanting to use this sample cant cause you threw a high pitched freq that is subliminal when at normal speed but pitched down is very noticiable..

Just my theory...
I sent a 3000 preamp back cause it had an exiter located in the gain stage..
It ruined what I wanted..
