Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000
By head034 Sun Feb 27, 2005 9:41 pm
Hello,

I am using the studios MPC 4000, but i usually use a 2000XL..

My question is concering the funtion that exsists on the 2000XL called "Mute Assign" in the voice overlap section..where you can assign 1 pad to cut 2 other pads..basically to make a closed hi hat be cut off instantly by a open hi hat..

Well, I would like to know if that funtion does exsist on the MPC 4000, and if so where?

Many Thanks for any info!!

PS: Really trying to learn my way around the MPC 4000 because I am thinking of making the purchase, and upgrading from my 2000XL.

well this is a little different in the 4000 than in the 2xl, mainly because in the 2xl you have 4 assignable mute assignments and on the 4k you have 64. Go into the Program, press F2 (or KG Mix, if you're not already looking at that window) and then press F3 (or pitch), there you have 64 assignable Mute Groups.

Assign your hihats to say...Mute Group 1 and now everything on Mute Group will be muted to whatever other sound has been assigned. you'll see what i mean. you can also go into the same screen where the Mute Groups are and change the 'Poly' to 1, then you'll have the sample(s) playing back as mono. which can bring about a similiar and often desired effect.

good luck, and hit me back if you get lost or i didn't explain well enough.

well i'm not sure i understand what you're wanting to do here. but if you're just trying to hear the sounds in your ASRX, while running the 4k, then we're talking midi. all you need to do in the midi department is, hookup your midi cables like:

ASRX> midi out to MPC midi in
ASRX> midi in to MPC midi out

then in the main screen of the MPC go to the 'Out1:PART' and change 'PART' to whatever Midi out channel you have your ASRX on (ie..midi out A, B, C or D). you can also set your corresponding midi channel there as well (which you'll need too). whatever the midi channel you have selected in the MPC needs to correspond with ASRX midi channel. you also dictate how the ASRX is coming into and will work with your MPC by hitting the 'Midi' button above the jogwheel and from there you can send the ASRX either to the MPC's 'Sampler or Sequencer'.

so thats a quick generic version...and thats only relative if i understood you correctly. if misunderstood, please repost your request so it's a little clearer.

also, check your manual. it covers Midi and many other of the basic in the 'Getting Started' guide.

also, noting that you said you just got....patience young grasshopper. read your manual, and really dig into the 4k. hit every button, then go through each parameter, hit 'Window' and see if that leads you anywhere or to another submenu. i definitely encourage you to read the MPC4000 Bible here in this forum as well. it's really not that hard of a machine to learn but you're gonna have to read, tinker, play, analize, read, tinker....you get the picture.

in the future if you have a question, leave a very simple but detailed post of what you need or 'think' you need. there's also a newbie forum for basic and/or generic questions. also, don't be a afraid to use the 'Search' option, much of 'everything' related to the MPC series has probably already been covered at some point.

some of the folks in here are a little fussy about newbies, the questions they ask, and the way they ask it. pay no mind to the snobbery and smugness. their are a lot of us that are willing to help those who are willing to learn their machine, but no one it gonna make anyone learn 'their' 4k.

good luck and i think with time you'll see you've got your hands on a very sweet machine! :)

I think I kind of get what your are saying...So I could have all 16 pads cut each other off? example: i could have all 16 pads filled with different parts of a sample chopped up,(typical piano loop/riff) and make play pad1 cut pad5, play pad1 cut pad8, and so on...I used to have my S950 midi to my MPC and I could assign the output to mono 1, and have a sample chopped up on all 16 pads, and have them all 16 pads cuting each other..That was a function that on the MPC you where at a handicap cause you would have to assign each pad to cut..and it took along time to do the assignment of pads. Where on the other hand you could assign multiple samples to the same mono out put and you where pretty much free to go, as long as they where assigned to the same output..This same function is set up on the SP1200 the same way...assign to one out put and you are able to make all 8 pads cut each other..

I feel it is a easy/quick way to make chops...truncate the beginning of each sample to where you want it, (no need to worry about the end) and just play the pads, and let the pads cutting each other do the work!!

Long winded and excited, but will try this at the studio tonite.

Thank You!!!

PS: where is the section located in the manuel?

page 83 & 85 of the MPC4000 User Guide....here's some of the text:

pg. 85...Mute field: Specifies the mute group (OFF, 1–64) to which the key group will belong. Key groups that belong to the same mute group will not sound simultaneously. For example if you assign the same mute group to open and closed hi-hat samples, playing one sample while the other sample is sounding will cause the first sound to be muted.

so to follow along and up. with in a Program, you can take any sounds in any of your 6 banks and assign them to a Mute Group (1-64). so if you have Openhihat_1, Openhihat_2, hihat1, hihat2, and lets say ride, you could assign them all to Mute Group #1. now any time you play any one of those sounds by itself, it'll play normally. but, if you play Openhihat_2 and then hit HiHat1, it'll cutoff/mute the Openhihat_2.

it'll make sense to ya' when you play with it. it's a real hot feature, or atleast i think so.

Thank You!!! alot!!!

If this is what I think it is, this might up my decision to upgrade from the 2000xl...This was my only gripe about the MPCs of the past...I used to have my Akai S950 midi to the MPC so that All I had to do was assign what ever sampled loops i chopped to that 1 output, how ever many pieces in the s950, and would not have to truncate the start and end points precisely of each individual sound..Just zero in to the beginning parts that I want and assign to all the pads like it is the 950...

It sounds like it the MPC 4000 is a combination of the older MPC's and akai S950 in one box, and then some!!

But will play around with that tonite!!!!! :D

Thank You Very Much!!!!!!
