How to sync Logic to MPC via MTC and MMC

Can't get this working.
I've searched and posted high and low.

I want the MPC1000 to be the master.
I've done all the settings but when I press play on the MPC
logic just sits at minus 8 bars (the seconds display on the transport moves though)

Do I need to use MMC too?

Can anyone please shed a bit of light on this???

Cool, I'm half way there, it's syncing!

Now another problem, the midi tracks in my sequence (sending midi to logic instruments) won't play when MPC is master (MTC)

Any ideas??

Had to go to song settings/sync/general and make the following changes
set 'Bar Position' to "1 1 1 1",
set 'Plays at SMPTE' to "0 : 0 : 0 : 0"

OK every body, if you're not doing this already you NEED to.

MPC should be master (via MTC)
Logic (or whatever DAW you use) should be slave.

Then set MPC recieve to MMC: on
Set Logic to transmit MMC

Beautiful (remember to make sure you've set the correct tempo/bpm in both your mpc and your DAW), you have mpc sequencing multiple instruments in Logic etc. and keep the MPC's timing...wow..

Be sure to monitor the mpc audio with direct monitoring, v. important, if you don't, you'll have alot more hasssle with latency issues until you track down

So far this is the most on-point my system has been.

what kind of instruments are you sequencing?

wide sounds, making use of Space Designer.
pads and sweeps, but also bass, drum fx,
whatever really!

Thanks alot for that tip I've only been using logic for a little while but, syncing was always something I couldn't do.

That doesn't always work well though. Sonar, for instance, won't run as slave as soon as you load any audio in it.

That may be a limitation of Sonar...but not normal behavior for any of the other leading DAW software.

Also, there are quite a few threads about syncing MPCs to your software DAWs all over these forums.

I didn't see any for Logic.

I'm still having troublesync'ing it up, I guess I would want it to be the other way, with Logic as Master. Everytime I press play the logic cursor doesn't move (although the mpc is triggered)

I have another question,
I mainly want the mpc timing...so could I hook up the mpc like you said....then, use the mpc to control NI battery inside of logic?

I want to control battery, with the mpc. so I could use the note repeat, and keep the swing of the mpc...but instead of recording all of the midi events in the mpc, it would be recorded in logic?

Volo - have you done the smpte setting?

Flu1512 - create a midi track in the mp (choose whatever midi channel), then set the battery instrument track in logic to that midi channel, then record your pattern in the mp. After that, record the midi from the mp to the instrument track in logic (which will work if you're sync'ed).

I didn't really explain it too well in that thread!
This all took me a lot of trawling around the net to find out.
'm using Logic Pro 7.1.1 (but 7.2 or Logic Express 7 would be the same method) on a Mac. (Logic doesn't support PC)
I'm using the latest, JJ OS 4.35.

This is how to set up so the MPC is the master, keeping it's timing and groove.

Be sure to monitor the mpc audio with direct monitoring (available on most I/O devices), v. important, if you don't, you'll have alot more hassle with latency, meaning you'd have to go and fiddle with MTC delay settings in Preferences/Midi/Sync (which is actually quite easy.

Logic Settings:

In - File / Song Settings / Synchronisation / Midi

Make sure Midi Clock is not set to transmit (uncheck box if needed)
Make sure Transmit MTC is unchecked
Make sure Transmit MMC is checked
Make sure Listen to MMC input is unchecked

In - File / Song Settings / Synchronisation / General

Sync Mode = "MTC" (also check the Auto Enable MTC box)
Set frame rate to "25 FPS"
Set Validate MTC to "always"
set 'Bar Position' to "1 1 1 1",
set 'Plays at SMPTE' to "0 : 0 : 0 : 0" (VERY important)

ALL the above settings are song settings so you would have to save the Logic song as a template if you want these settings to be in effect every time you start a new song, otherwise would have to be done manually every time.


MPC settings:

In sync page (MODE+9 - F2)

Sync In = Slave
Mode:OFF
Recieve MMC: ON (This means Logic transport [play, stop etc] will trigger the MPC)

Sync Out = Master
Mode: MIDI TIME CODE
Frame Rate: 25
Send MMC: OFF"

When everything is set up correctly...are you able to record the patterns directly in logic, or are you forced to record the patterns in the mpc?

Either.
If you set the midi up properly, with multiple channels from your mpc to logic, you can record the midi you are playing straight into Logic - or indeed into your MPC sequence/song (and then into logic later on if you so wish) - it works in any number of ways

if it's sync'd with MTC, surely this is done automatically? ie: the slave follows the master's tempo.
