4 GB CF Microdrive Works In My 2500

I have a 4G microdrive CF that I use in my camera.
Never thought about trying it in my 2500, because I
have a nice HDD....

I was discussing a friend last night, and in theory,
we figured it would work..
I tried it today.

My position is, since you can get a HDD for a few bucks more
why go the expensive CF route?

But like him, maybe someone else thinks its
a good idea...

this has been mentioned before, but good looking out anyways...

also don´t forget about broken ipods, some of them have the same hdd in it and go for dirt cheap or free...

I don't really see the advantage of microdrives over CF cards. They have moving parts as opposed to CF cards, which makes them more delicate. Their write/read speeds are limited, and are far exceeded by modern CF cards already. The price per GB is about the same.

The general advantage of CF memory over real hard drives is obviously the portabillity and mechanical robustness.

The Hard drive INSIDE the MPC isnt portable?

Mine moves eveytime I move my MPC.....

Can you tell me what "CF Type II" that is CLEARLY printed on the microdrive stands for?

I thought it was Compact Flash Type II.

did you ever think that "CF Type II" just stands for the type of card slot the microdrive can be put into?

if it was really a Compact Flash card, they'd call it a friggin Compact Flash card and not a "drive".

From Wikipedia:

"Microdrives

Microdrives are tiny hard disks—about 25 mm (1") wide—packaged with a CompactFlash Type II form factor and interface. They were developed and released in 1999 by IBM in a 170 megabyte capacity. The division was then sold to Hitachi in December 2002 along with the Microdrive trademark. There are now other brands that sell Microdrives (such as Seagate, Sony, etc), and, over the years, these have become available in increasingly larger capacities (up to 8 GB as of August 2007).

While these drives fit into any CF II slot, they take more power on average (500 mA maximum) than flash memory (100 mA maximum) and so may not work in some low-power devices (for example, NEC HPCs). Being a mechanical device they are more sensitive to physical shock and temperature changes than flash memory."

Clearly, the last sentence of the second paragraph states that there is a difference between the two.

I see what people mean about this board.

And I even bought the "bible"... from this place.

My point is that the card fits and it works.
I dont care if it has tissue paper inside.

I thought the info would be helpful.
Maybe you already knew.
I didn't.
If there is another post about it I was unaware

Not all of us have had a 2500 forever....
