how to tell new and old pads apart without having to open..?

wassup all.....i've got a brand new MPC-1000 on the way, and was just wondering if there is any quick way to tell if it has the new pads installed without having to open the unit?

the old pads will suck, the new pads will not

but seriously -- the old pads will feel rock-solid when you hit them.

the new pads should 'give' a little bit when you press on them

easiest way - i just posted this in the comparison subforum.

the way to tell is to lift up the corner of a corner pad. does the pad's edge come up above the frame? if so, new pads. or you could just grab 1 pad and and move it east/west/north south. if it moves the rest of them, new pads.

old pads won't behave like that. they won't move as a group, their lips wont come up over the frame grid.

just to follow-up... you should all know that antonym's technique of distinguishing new pads from old ones is probably the quickest way to confirm if your mpc came shipped with the new ones or not. and it's real easy to do too.

as soon as i took it out the box, i went for pad #13 and pulled the upper left corner out of the frame gently with my fingernail...




i could tell right away when the excess rubber popped out, that these were definitely the new pads...




and don't worry... the excess rubber lip can be tucked back under the frame easily and your mpc will be back to normal in seconds...




my model is just the MPC1000BK... it does not have the letter N... i'm still not sure if there are any differences between that model and mine... but these are definitely the new pads.

I just bought the black one MPC1000 on ebay. .. I would hate to have the old pads... that is going to be a stressful time when i use this test method... thanks for the pics man! this board is amazing..

I just got one on Saturday.. MPC1000BK, and after trying the tricks shown here I am sure I have the old pads... Do I have any options in regards to this.. Should I take it back to Sam Ash and try for another one?

if you have the option, i would DEFINITELY take it back to SAM ASH... they should have a 30 day no questions asked guarantee... take it back, tell them that you were only buying one brand-new to get the new pads (and let them know you can get one with the old pads for half price)... if they won't exchange it, get a refund and buy one elsewhere... i know for sure that americanmusical.com is stocking the new ones [as long as you don't buy a refurbished one]... if you're JUST getting one, don't settle for the old pads.

and i'm curious... does yours also have the solid black back?

are you talking about the underside? The rest of the unit is black...

I can take it back..... I called and the tech said I should have the updated pads. He said the older version was selling for 799 and once they got rid of them they started selling the new ones. He said mines is a newer one and the pads should be the newer ones. He also said they do not carry the MPC1000BK-N, he never heard of that, but he was not 100% sure about it so he was gonna have a manger call me back tomorrow. While I am waiting for them to call, what other way is it to tell they are new or old.. My ads look like the ones pictured above, but I cannot pull the corner out as shown, and I cannot move the pads at all (North, south, east, an west)... I am willing to pull it apart so what should I look for? Thanks for all the help...... The pads are rock solid in the middle and have alot of give on the corners......

I took it apart and the pads have a black fram on them, they are def individual pads...... I hope I can get a replacement with the newer pads on it.... This sucks..... I waited 6 months to buy this thing to make sure I was getting what I wanted and what I needed......

get your mpc, with real mpc pads.

nice one, man... good thing you noticed right away and can switch it... i just got mine and i'd be pissed if they tried to sell me the old model.

make sure you don't tell them that you opened the unit. just say that you could tell by "the feel of the pads" and you should be good.
