Dleted is 100% right, make music for 15 years. You're talking about the best of the best here, they probably spent years just tinkering with their gear and months making one track. The best thing you can do is the same, learn your gear inside and out. I would suggest a Nord Modular, they make for the ultimate in flexibility. Also keep in mind, the gear that those guys have is nuts. I'm sure they've got $5-10,000 Lexicon reverbs, Neve pre-amps, tube compressors, the works. Ah and in some cases studio musicians. As far as sequencing techniques, LISTEN TO MUSIC and recreate it. Try to hear all the tiny nuances that a drum or instrument sounds like at differnent moments. You could try getting a record and playing it reallllly slow, copying a beat, and messing with it. Good luck man. why dont you just sample loops off their cd's for gods sake. why not try and take there style to a new dimension, and not emmulate it but make it new and exciting.
