As I don't have the original floppy anymore (have been using internal SCSI but it can't handle vibration very dependently) I used an old samsung floppy from the pc - but it just won't read any disks (that work in the pc). It has a light on and spins like a limp wristed baby sitter. I plugged everything in quite well and some configuration of the cable will cause the floppy not to be found at all. It is also weird that i can flip the cable on both the motherboard and floppy, and the effect is the same - just spinning. Maybe this model of floppy isn't supported... In anycase this is why I can't upgrade OS at the moment and am dicking around with the CF on os 1.14.

just an observation - your problem 'gets deeper' because you are throwing more things into the mix than you need to. you are trying to get a new card reader AND a floppy to work.
stick with one for now.
use your KNOWN WORKING internal zip to upgrade the os, then move on to the card reader.

throwing another new piece of gear into the fray is just asking for trouble and you'll never be able to isolate the problem (this seems to be a theme this morning  ).

hey Tape, I don't have a Zip. I have an internal HDD. I don't have any way of transfering the new OS to it..so I am trying to get a floppy to work, just so I can upgrade. Then go on to the card reader. So its actually not that confusing as I made it out to be.

my bad - i read 'internal scsi' as 'internal zip'.

still you catch my point right? use what was working beforehand

edit: i get the issue now yer 'internal scsi' is an internal HARD DRIVE...so you cant easily swap that to the computer.

so your mpc had no floppy drive?

So I finally got my mcd card kit from mpc stuff and I got the floppy but when I load the floppy it says its empty? How do I upgrade it? Where it says type it says type = ????. did mpc stuff **** me over and send an empty disk?

@tape: I threw my floppy out in 2003 :] . I guess i could try to find some kind of scsi enclosure or interface card for my pcs and put that OS file on it.
Today I got another floppy drive to try..hope it works

Lonnie i have the same issue with my floppy drive, but it doesnt even read anything. just sits and spins. Its some Samsung drive from 2007 i think. Don't know whatsup...I carefully have tried all combinations imaginable and I am guessing I need to upgrade to 1.2 asap.

Hi everyone.
I got a very cheap adapter working by ravaging a failed abortion which was meant to be an SCSI card reader for my S1100. Here's a quick graphical report:

-Pull away the floppy drive. Save the power cable.
Image

-Get a standard ATAPI ribbon cable from a computer and drill a hole through any blind connectors.
Image

-Get a cheap CF adapter and set the pins to IDE master.
Image

-Get a CF card, preferrably from a decent brand (I believe many cheap cards will give problems, I've got a generic one somewhere which I will try and see what happens).
Image

-Get a bracket (it is not strictly necessary though...). The one I had is about the worst one you can possibly find, just a piece of metal with a couple of holes.
Image

-Stick a piece of sh*t to the bracket to level the card connector with the slot. Use glue for instant gratification, or screws if you want a neat and durable solution.
Image

-Attach the adapter to the piece of sh*t.
Image

-Connect the ribbon and the power supply cable.
Image

-Fit the bracket the best way you can. If you were lazy enough to use glue, be extra careful so that the adapter doesn't detach (it took me two tries, you can do better  ).
Image

-The result is... not too shabby actually.
Image

-Stick the card into your brand-new reader. By the way, I LOVE the bacon pads. You haters. They even glow in the dark, what more do you want?
Image

-OMG it works!
Image

If you are unlucky enough to use the same adapter as mine and a similar mounting bracket, then the power cable will probably be too tight, because the connector doesn't quite fit inside the gap between the adapter and the MPC case, and because the cable is too short.

-Take the connector and peel away the little plastic bump.
Image

-There, nice and smooth.
Image

-Do something to increase the length of your cable (I peeled the rubber, twisted the cables together, added a drop of solder and wrapped it all up). Make sure the cable layout is the same as in the original cable!
Image

-The cable now fits fine, and you can put the bottom lid without further trouble.
Image

-Saving a sound just to be sure...
Image

-The sound loads correctly. Challenge complete.
Image

Of course, if you buy the components specifically for fitting into the MPC you will probably have a lot less trouble than trying to fit some components you already have at home. But in any case, cheap adapters work and you can easily save $100 by doing this.

So yeah, I was bored and decided to install a CF reader on my MPC and take photos of all the process (I was actually quite okay with the floppies, I had tons of them... I miss them now :( ). Since it would be a waste to simply delete the photos, I decided to upload them here and force you to see them so that you can waste as much time watching them as it took me to take them and upload them  .

Do you think that this one will work?

I don't read the language (is it Russian?), however, judging from the picture;

It looks like ATAPI CF reader, which is hot-swappable. (XL compatible Hot-swappable ATAPI CF readers are hard to find.)
Most of ATAPI CF readers don't work with MPC-2000XL, therefore, I don't think it'll work.
