Have now installed and played around with the fx card... its really nice!! I really wished I got the fx card 6 years ago when I bought the mpc2kxl... so many beats produced without any effects or anything..

favorites so far:

Echo
Reverb (really like the tweaking capabilities)
Distortion ( razes the overall volume of the sound its applied to if the distortion gain is set low and the amount of volume is high) good for boosting bass
Mod(chorus) had a clave sample become the sound of rain drops...

Had the day off so I took time to document and take pix of the installment and post a tutorial of installing the
EB16.. check the 2000/2000xl section

Anyone who "loves" the sound of the EB16 hasn't really got a clue about quality effects. It's nice to have as another option within the MPC, but it's not even semi-pro in quality. 10 minutes spent with Waves plugins shows you this.

meh, I have much better effects.... but none of them are hiding inside my mpc!

I like having it there incase. sometimes pushing play and messing with the effects on a specific sample can trigger some ideas.

The echos are fine... not too complicated of an effect.

the distortion I am not a huge fan of, but I rarely am when it comes to distortion (depending on the sample type)...

the reverb is not too bad ( I have definately heard worse.... although I have also heard better. I find different reverbs are quite different from pluggin to pluggin, unit to unit that having an extra one is a bonus)

the filter... it's a filter. I prefer using a parametric EQ to make some filters but this filter is not too bad.

The fx are not AMAZING, but for the average user they are a big plus. for the collectors the eb16 is a good investment when found cheap because the longer we wait the more rare they become.

I have an eb16 and I love it. I also know about Waves plugins and I feel that
eb16 wasn't made in competition to serious effects machines/plugs, that count?

It's an inbox solution not to seriously contend with the big boys. But it does have it's purposes if
you mess with it and understand it for what it is.

Man, people shit on that little card all day long but it does what it does and that's that.

What's WAY more annoying to me is that the effects in the 2500 are no better... and you could argue that they are worse! :?

I don't expect them to come with convolution reverbs and vintage modelled EQs and compressors, but while MPCs can sometimes feel truly inspirational to use, the quality of the effects has always felt like an afterthought.

well just imagine how heavy the mpc would be with a space echo duct taped to the bottom!

Well just imagine how 'heavy' the MPC would be with a space echo emulation already built in.

I've not had much luck/(skill) with the filter, tried to cut some low end out, but it didn't seem to do jack.

Got any tips?

Turn the three lowest band completeley off (scroll to the left on the volume with the data wheel) and use only the top one. Set frequency to the lowest and go up for a thinner sound.

Or you can use the one second from the top (turn all others off) set Q to 99 at first, and find the erea you want.

Mess with those two, and you will see that you can get the bass out.

I had the same Q actually, but will it give me a High pass effect if I roll off the low frequencies?

Thanks man, it kinda works, still got a lot of low end though really.

Yeah, I think the filter slope is not that steep, but it helps me to clear my samples up a lot. To kill the lowest frequencies I kill the bass band on my DJ mixer when I sample, so that helps me get rid of everything.

I'd say you came across a pretty good bargain, only 60 Bucks? Thats not bad at all.
Its better than shelling out 350 plus or whatever ridiculous price akai was selling them for.
And yeah its always been funny to me how akai always seemed to put off making effects a standard inbox type of thing...and for so long, quite pathetic..thats truly where the competition has managed to bury them for so long.

I've always seemed to find workarounds though, as of late ive just been EQ'ing and adding effects and or filtering my samples through the Microkorgs suberb effects processors before sampling into the 2k.
