Yo I spent sometime investigating seems there are some on here are are having bad luck with 950's reader he is selling.
I also had two Akai techs (1 Guitar Center & 1 Akai dealer tech) check in on this one has gotten back to me the other has not yet. So far one tech I was able to talk to at the store and had him read what Rohan said... Well, he smirked and laughed and said he never heard of such a thing. Although he did add "well the tech KINDA works out.." in other words he said its possible the problem could be fuse related but not likely. "Sure, they get old and a little touchy." His advice was to send it back and try another reader. If the 2nd one fails then maybe there is a compatibility issue or FUSE (maybe). His theory is that Akai never meant the MPC's to work with Flash Card readers. The science behind todays assumed compatibility is hit or miss. He compared it to when you purchase parts for an old car. You may have to modify new parts to fit the old car. Some work great while others without perfect modification causes problems for the old car.
One thing the guy from my local Guitar Center added was that the fuse can be replaced easily by a tech. Usually repair is of moderate price. However, a owner can replace his or herself. He hasn't any idea where to find parts because he hasnt worked on an MPC2K in 3 or 4 years. He also added the part is expensive from Akai and cheaper for electronic stores (Radio Shaq?)
Just what I got so far. I have another Akai tech that hasn't called or emailed me back yet so when he does I will post what he says. The guy I am waiting on works at an Akai dealer and currently refurbs old MPCs. Done alot work for studios and artist. He seems pretty busy so it may be awhile before I can add to this.
I am not busting chops just letting the headz know what's up. No drama just kicking the knowledge to those who seek.
