Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Yo I spent sometime investigating seems there are some on here are are having bad luck with 950's reader he is selling.

I also had two Akai techs (1 Guitar Center & 1 Akai dealer tech) check in on this one has gotten back to me the other has not yet. So far one tech I was able to talk to at the store and had him read what Rohan said... Well, he smirked and laughed and said he never heard of such a thing. Although he did add "well the tech KINDA works out.." in other words he said its possible the problem could be fuse related but not likely. "Sure, they get old and a little touchy." His advice was to send it back and try another reader. If the 2nd one fails then maybe there is a compatibility issue or FUSE (maybe). His theory is that Akai never meant the MPC's to work with Flash Card readers. The science behind todays assumed compatibility is hit or miss. He compared it to when you purchase parts for an old car. You may have to modify new parts to fit the old car. Some work great while others without perfect modification causes problems for the old car.

One thing the guy from my local Guitar Center added was that the fuse can be replaced easily by a tech. Usually repair is of moderate price. However, a owner can replace his or herself. He hasn't any idea where to find parts because he hasnt worked on an MPC2K in 3 or 4 years. He also added the part is expensive from Akai and cheaper for electronic stores (Radio Shaq?)

Just what I got so far. I have another Akai tech that hasn't called or emailed me back yet so when he does I will post what he says. The guy I am waiting on works at an Akai dealer and currently refurbs old MPCs. Done alot work for studios and artist. He seems pretty busy so it may be awhile before I can add to this.

I am not busting chops just letting the headz know what's up. No drama just kicking the knowledge to those who seek.

I also got one of these readers from 950 (not dissing or saying anything negative either) I have tried everything!! Got it about a month ago did my research.
1. set the proper scsi id's
2. Not parell to scsi
3. Formatted card
4. tried to daisy chain (works for a second but then won't save program I get a Image
5. tried to plug it in stright in to the mpc with scsi id 5 (all I get is a "WAIT"
6. called JD at scsiforsamplers, he say's that he sells the same exact one and no problems yet..and they're flying of the shelf....
If anyone else has one of these....Image

Here's a thought...from the picture it looks like you're using a PCMCIA adapter. Have you tried a different adapter? I think I have that same kind of Kingston card in my reader (PCD 47-b), and I have never had any problems, after over a year. I also have a PCMCIA adapter in one of my card slots, and that is my main slot/card. I don't remember what kind, but I could go down to the lab and see if it would make a difference. Trying to eliminate all the variables.

Peace,
KM

Yeah... Okay the adapter could be it too. I think Scsi 4 Samplers sell theirs with them already. So I am going to pick up a different adapter... If I can find one for cheap if not I am just gonna pick one up from Scsi 4 Samplers.

I have an mpc-2000xl. I've had the internal multi card reader for about a year. I checked all the specs to make sure it was a compatible drive and bought it off ebay. But it gives me nothing but problems. Sometimes when I boot up the thing, it renames all of the data on the card. Other times after I've finished a song, I'll try to save it and card reader will refuse to read the card. Sometimes it won't read the card at all from the jump. The thing is ****. I'm going to cope a new one off of mpc stuff so I don't have to cannibalize anything and deal with this fugging nightmare.

Hate to rehash this topic, but I found a site that might help everyone out! I will give a try myself, when I have time. I have skimmed through it but wasn't clear on certain things. Maybe you one of you guys can benefit, and shed some more light on your progress..
My boy told me don't sell or toss your card reader, get some firmware, he said most likely the xl will work with the classic.... So hear we go I think this site might clear some **** up... Hope this helps you AND ME!!!!

did you try to terminate the unused card reader port when you connected it directly to the mpc.?

Hey thanks bra' man. Yeah, i tried terminating it. It has 2 sliders similar to the new zip drives. As i understand it you move these to terminate and to turn parity on or off. So, ive been messing around with it. First I set it up just like "950" said but i kept getting "wait" message from MPC and error lights on the external SCSI reader when connect directly to the MPC2K. I tried later to dasiy chain it just as you described and to muy suprise it worked!! I didnt think it would but it did. So I immediately unhooked the zip and hooked up the card reader to the MPC2k and once again error lights and wait message.
950 says fuse blown maybe in reader that dosent make sense though? It wouldnt work with the zip if at end of chain then. Right?
Anyway I got a terminator plug and I am going to see how that works out. Im guessing I could just hook the reader to the 2K and and plug the unused scsi on the reader and get it to work.

This how it looks on the back notice the 2 sliders there. Not much to deal with i suppose. Yo thanks yall for helping out.

yo, i got the EXACT same ext card reader, that spyrus right?

i have the exact same one, and it doesn't seem to work on my 2xl, everytime i try to load it says "no scsi device!" or it says "Not ready!"

im sick of that, and am dropping an mcd kit from mpcstuff, the zip drive in my 2xl has no purpose since i have no other zip drives, so yeah cf card FTW
