akai eb16 fx chip ??

i was thinking of buying one of these
it seems a lot simpler than say
getting an efx processor, 8 outs and a mixer
and cheaper in the long run
im jus wondering about how versatile and effective it is
i figured this wud be a good place to ask some knowledgeable people

I have the effects board and I never use it. It might come in handy for live shows. But if you are using it for recording, stick to outboard gear or software for effects. The effects are not that great.

can i mess with a sound to how i like it
and then overdub it over a sequence im working on?

The sounds really aren't very great...but it's a good simple solution for playing live. And for pre-production it's good for use as a kind of scratch pad for fx ideas. Hell, I've even found some settings that have a weird so-bad-it's-good kind of vibe that I might even use in a final mix.
It's worth having, but the 8-outs is a more important upgrade for studio work.

the sounds are pure crap, you might as well get a cheap soundcard that lets you use inputs, and do it like that. I am telling you, you wil not regret it, The akai sounds are so damn weak.

i use them in every beat i make on the mpc. the ' four band eq ' has 2 lfo's and is great for string and sweep sounds and the odd pulsating bass. the chorus & distortion rock. Few different delays (mono, stereo, x over) Reverbs arnt to bad. Try using the rotary speaker simulator on a nice rhodes auto chromed sample, using the modwhell for the movement speed. sounds dope. The pitch feedback/delay options i dont use all the time. i use ring mod sometimes. p/feedback and ring mod i tend to use more for techno and harder styles of music as the results are brash & digitali. the distorion can be used to dirty up any sound especially breaks really brings out a sheen on some samples. the 8 outs adds more fleixibilty being by able to route FX1,FX2,Rev1,Rev2 on there own individual outputs to the mixer for better balance and further tweakidge.

Personally i feel the Fx are not weak, when used correctly. I dished out the coin, so i chose to learn this card inside and out. And i am happily satisfied. Even though i do run other external fx and filters. i will always find a need for the EB16.. my only gripe is no ability to resample after the effects have been applied.

You might be better to get the 8 outs and a 8 input soundcard. fuk cool edit off. and get some real software package with some decent fx.

also, i was wondering why you can't "automate" each FX's level tracks, like in the mixer?

^^^Reread nanoloops post (notice how he didn't even mention reverb). If all you need is top notch reverb (especially if you soak your samples with verb), then I would agree to look elsewhere. If you learn how to use it properly it is a necesary tool to make things easier as well as getting new sounds. If you aren't using verb heavily, it works more than fine for live and as a scratchpad as mentioned above.

People that bash the verb, what do you expect for $200 on a 4 channel multi effect? You can easily spend 500 and a single channel verb alone and people will say its not that good (usually comparing to the $2000 plugin they stole off the internet).
