I've been thinking should I trade in my EPS 16 and get an ASR 10??

These DD Disk are nerve Racking, plus the EPS is a tad bit more Grimey and has less Fx and memory than the ASR 1O. What would you do???

Well, it would actually depend on the ASR 10s you have available. The early editions were prone to a lot of crashing in their sequencers. If you find one with LCD screen--even a rack--snatch it up.

I was contemplating the same thing myself. The ASR has stereo sampling, more FX and memory, but I don't know for a fact if it's more or less "MIDI finicky" as my EPS 16+ is in the studio. That was my major issue with the EPS 16+. I could never get it to act right in the studio when multitracking with MIDI involved. Made for sloooow sessions, which is why I got the MPC 2000XL. I still plan to keep the EPS---I did too many tracks on it to just drop it---but I do plan to replace its place next to my MPC with another sampler of some kind.

Do you mean the one with the purple Screen??
Why not just get the Regular one?? What type of Midi Problems
does it tend to have??

IF you Sell Your EPS 16 Can't you use those same sounds/seqs on your ASR 10??

Get an ASR-10 if you can get one at a good price...The EPS disk can be read on the ASR-10 with minimal glitches (they're both computers, so nothing's perfect).

Yup. The first ones they came out with had sequencer bugs. As far as MIDI and my EPS, I couldn't do any "toggling" or going back and forth at will scanning a track. As soon as I'd press fast fwd and then rewind the sequencer would crash and all my mixer, output, and effect settings would go into default. It was horrible and never failed. So, to get around that, I would never use MIDI in the studio with the EPS. I never used anything else with it, so I just ran the tracks as pure audio into Cakewalk or Vegas or whatever.

I could load any of my EPS disks in an ASR-10, even an ASR-X.
Good luck.

The only problem with the ASR-X and EPS is that the ASR-X can't read the EPS sequences/songs.

Yes, that is very correct. Thanks.

I don't understand why Ensoniq didn't allow backwards compatibility on the ASR-X?! But, Rubber Chicken (chickensys.com) offers various EPS-to-any sampler transalation programs. Also, Giebler Enterprises offers an EPS/ASR-to-MIDI file software package. That software will allow you to save your EPS and ASR sequences/songs to standard midi files (.MID).

That was the irony of EMU buying out Ensoniq...slowly, over time, the EPS 16+, the ASR-10, and the ASR-X all gained in popularity for some very simple reasons that have been hinted at in this thread. Now, there's all kind of support for these machines! Even after I heard how much some industry heads "hate" the sound and kind of treated the ASR and EPS like stepkids, spreading rumours that they're "not professional machines" and nonsense like that. There are no rules for art!

I remember saying earlier that I was going to replace my EPS, but I've changed my mind! I'm picking up new MIDI cables today and start to really get busy. (Just don't know how storing these tracks will work in a convenient way, though)

For real, the EPS, ASR-10, and ASR-X Pro have some of the best sampling engines on the market! My MPC is primarily used for drums and sequencing. But my ASR-10 and ASR-X Pro are my samplers of choice for detailed sampling and sample editing. Need I mention the built in effects and filters (especially on the ASR-X Pro...and changes in filters can be recorded in the sequence!!). Many of my studio clients still stick by their EPS/ASR's (Opus Akoben, DJ Stylus, Oddissee, the Unknown, Black Mongoose, Theory, Paysir, and many more!). My other clients are the MPC and Triton users; and half of them still use an ASR or EPS.

Bottom line, Emu should recognize the loyal group of users how would be willing to invest in an ASR-Next Level if they ever developed it. Imagine the possiblities.

You know Terrence, Kokayi, and Rhome? Do you know Priest, Asheru, and RBI too?

OH ok, what's good man! DC is small even in here, sheesh! I didn't get that PM, but get at me, though, there's some news I need to pass on to Priest if he hasn't gotten it already.

Emu is owned by Creative...and you all know what Creative makes. There will never be another hardware sampler put out by EMU....plain and simple the market won't drive it. not like it used to at least....it's a shame. Just to think about all those E-MU designers making soundblaster cards what a shame.

There's a rumour going around that Emu is planning a software version of the ASR-10. Dont know if there's any truth to it. Anyway, software emulation blows.
