Killa,
I feel these cats all have valid points. 'cept for "Eat my Richard..." which, I don't know why money said that, but, it's Fu*#ing hillarious...
anyway, I agree w/ both arguments. The ASRX, as a sampler, is way better than the MPC, unless you f'in w/ an MPC4000. But the ASR is a REAL sampler, meaning you can filter, attack, decay, release, etc, in REAL time. Not just on retrigger like the 2000 series. Also, the audio outputs (8outs steeze w/ 2 stereo, just like the MPC) are way warmer than the MPCs, meaning, it just sounds better. The algorithms and oversampling, basically the engine of the machine, is just plain higher quality, and therefore sounds less tinny. THis has to do with white noise, and it's just a fact of life in the digital realm. HOWEVER, the heart and soul of the MPC is it's interface and it's sequencer. The screen is WAY better to look at on the MPC than the ASRx. THe asr is like reading a friggin calculator that was built in the 80s. Quichy for some, but when you serious, no fun at all. Most importantly, I feel, w/ the screen: The MPC series has waveform display, so you can chop effortlessly, and a separate zone section, so when you chop, your making a duplicate of that size only. With e asr, you gotta listen over and over and dial in numbers. Cats who rock the mpc60 and 3000 will tell you that that's better, cus you're soing it with your ears, but combining that w/ the annoyance of the asr interface is weeetaaaded (retarded).
Lastly, the ASR SEQUENCER SUCKS ASS. Plain and simp, dog. It's rediculously annoying to sit down at that thing and play something funky. Now, don't tell that to The Alchemist, he loves the ASR series. But for real, the quantizing sucks on those, and you will hate that.
Now, I will say that, based on the difference in how the samplers sound, the interfaces, and how you sequence differently, you will come up with a rather different sound from an ASR, perhaps in a pleasing manner. If you have the dough, cop an MPC4000. You get the realtime control & knobs and shit, but skip the whack sequencer. What I do is go to sam ash or guitar center, play with them sh*%ts for a couple weeks, then go buy the one I like somewhere cheaper. Peace..
