help out a new member (midi controller)

whats up everybody. im new to the forums and new to mpc's all together. i just got a 2000xl and im seeing alot of people talking about using midi controllers along with it. can someone explain to me how using the midi controller with the mpc gives you the edge over just using the mpc on its own, and also what would be a decent one to buy in the range of 100-400 dollars? one last question, in your opinion should i just learn the mpc2000xl on its own and all its functions first before i build on with the controller.

It doesn't help (maybe it does) but there really aren't any fundamental features in the 2000xl sampler you can control with a midi controller (see the midi implementaion chart in the back of your 2000xl manual)

the MPC series have all the knobs, pads and buttons you need to control the internal sequencer / sampler - you could get a foot switch to control the start, stop and record functions

But if you prefer to play keys instead of pads - cool...and you never know when you may want to use it on something like Reason -

But in my opinion a midi a controller is overkill with the MPC series - you don't need one

Spend that money on a trip to LA and go see Carl Cox @ Circus July 10th - I'll be there and we can go to Guitar Center the next day, maybe lunch

If you want to utilize the autochromatic assignment feature effectively, than I suggest a midi controller, The M-audio Radium 61 would probably be good. at $200.00 and 61 keys w/knobs you can't go wrong.
