Are you sure about that? I read that this is the % range roger linn chose cus they are the funkiest and most useable. is'nt straight 16, 0 swing.
most software packages allow 0 to 100% swing.

depends on what Im doing

I only use swing on hihats and sometimes it helps with some short melody making samples.

1/8 reg with 1/8 swing

1/16 with 1/16 swing usually


to make some killer drum rolls I make a continuous 1/8 hihat with 1/16 with swing on top

take mute on and off of the 1/16 with swing and it will sound pretty slick

but - to be honest - every single track I make is different

i have no ONE set swing that I use

im sure no one actually does

I agree 50% is zero swing:: you can tell it makes an evenly spaced rhythm.

otoh, with this terminology, swing less than 50% would actually move the secondary 8th or 16th notes AHEAD of their normal time; indeed that would be less usable cause most drummers never do this... it might be kinda cool for some abstract thing though.

50%, 51% and 52% are all zero swing (in 1/16).
Swing starts at 53%.

Swing is a part of Time Correction. You can see the result of it in Step Edit.
If you have a note at 001.01.72, swing values 50%, 51% or 52% won't change it. Swing value 53% makes it 001.01.73

Ah I see it gets rounded off. So how about 8th notes... they are longer so perhaps 52% would have a noticable effect (or have I got it backwards )

it really depends on how much or if i want it to match up with my samples/bassline.

usually 65-70 though. on 16 TC.

i tried this yesterdays, but i did´nt think it sounded good, it just sounded a little off beat.. i did´nt try it with a sample thou..i just made a drumloop.. anyone who got any tips for me? what should i set the hihats at? what should i set the kicks n snares on? which TC. which swing percent? some one who can show an good example?

I didn't grasp swing until i bought my xl7 and in the manual it gave me a few percentages to try out. But i need help with some thing, you know on old house and disco tracks how the hat plays 1/8 notes but offset, like a few Swiss Beats tracks. like take hotel and bring em out? I can do it on all my sequensers in the past, even my 2000, but i can do it for shit on this damn 1000.`

yeah i don't dig it that much either for a lot of things, particularly for melody. i always quantize my bass, though - that's one thing i rarely want to be sloppy. the day will come though that an unquantized bass will be just what i need.

so much stuff these days displays a sickeningly lowbrow use of quantization....it's like come on man, get your hand off the note repeat and actually built an interesting hi hat pattern. just cuz you eat grits all the time doesn't mean your beats have to be so uniform.
