Just read the manual, in the introduction you can find a clear explenation of all the used terms. But because my work is so boring right now I will try to explain it to you anyway.

A programm is actually all your settings how you want your samples to be played when you hit a pad. Simple example: In my programm I assigned a kick drum to pad A1. I set the level for pad 1A on level 80. I set the pitch on -1, and put a little low pass filter on it with a value of 80, and a resonance of 20.

If you save this programm, all these settings I wrote down will be saved. Make sure you also save the sample itself, otherwise the programm KNOWS that there's a kickdrum assigned to pad A1, but will not be able to play this sample, because you didn't save the sample.
So you have the sample itself, and the programm that only hold it's settings and remembers to wich pad each sample is assigned.

this is the bit i dont get, cos the program doesnt contain the samples? does it? you save the samples separately?

think of the program like 'Shortcuts' in Windows. The program just tells the MPC which sample to look for, and then which settings to apply to it.

Yes, the sample are saved separately.

You can have the same samples in multiple programs as well. They don't always have to be different samples, you could have two programs of the same exact sample if you wanted, but for instance one program has a low pass filter and one does not

cause maybe your all confusing him, to keep it simple when you save a program the samples in that program are saved, when you load that same program the samples will be loaded. Start by sampling a sound any sound, name that sound, put it on a pad, name the program the default program name is program01, change this and save it. Now turn your mpc off, turn it back on, load the program, your sample will be loaded along with it, you can put up to 64 in each program, 16 per bank there are 4 banks A B C D
