Oi

I recently backed up about 700mb of data from my mpc via USB. It took about 2.5 hours(!)

Im wondering if transfer is faster with a CF-Card reader?
Its going to be completely death-defying to transfer about 20 gigs of files with the USB cable, when u get a HD for the mpc... i hope they have solved that in a good way. :)

Theres nothing to solve, USB can only go so fast...

if you get a usb2 card reader it will go much faster. (the mpc connection being usb1)

the only thing is that your computer needs to support USB 2.0 or that USB 2.0 card reader will only read and write at the speed of USB 1.1 (which is slow as hell).

SH!t! The MPC IS 1.1! Damn - so when I get my HD this week, and transfer a the 1.5 Gb worth of samples I've been compiling, its gonna take forever!

OK USB 1.1 = 12Mb/second. 700/12=58.3333

So it should have taken a minute to transfer 700Mb.

Is that right, am I figuring this out correctly?

Maybe it is slower through the mpc?

Great idea about USB 2.0 reader btw dudes!

No - its probably the CF. Writing to CF (or any flash-based drive) usually takes longer than to HD. SO that means writing to HD is probably faster than that! Thank god, I've got a TON of samples I want to dump to my HD when the adaptor comes (shipped today!)

OK listen,... Lemme tell you my experience with this topic...

It was a truly happy day when I happened to hook up a PNY (cheap model, FYO) CF reader to my Mac G4, and decided to back up a CF card without going through my MPC 1K. All I can say is, that with my setup, it was (and continues to be) a significantly faster transfer rate than if I was to use the MPC 1K itself, as a thousand dollar CF reader. I can't explain why this is the case, but I figured I should at least mention my experience...

K, done

:)

Oops,

shoulda mentioned this in my previous post:

I said that my CF reader was significantly faster than if transferred through the MPC 1K...

To point out the obvious, so I don't fet any silly comments! :)

- It was RELATIVELY faster

- NO, it doesn't even come close to transfer rates you experience with SCSI, FW, USB2, IDE, blah blah blah

I noticed there IS a difference, just don't expect the (obviously) impossible
