I know that four beats in 4/4 isn't called a bar, it's called a measure. But no one here wants to hear any of that.

from wikipedia:
In musical notation, a bar or measure is a segment of time defined as a given number of beats of a given duration. The word measure is heard more frequently in the U.S., while bar is used in other English-speaking countries, although musicians generally understand both usages

If Mingus were still alive and you walked up to him and said "let me take a 24 bar solo" -- he would smack the **** outta you. I'm just saying, wikipedia might say it, doesn't mean it's not a term used by ignorant producers who don't know their theory. But again, no one wants to hear how they don't know something.

I understand the word measure. I understand the word bar and i understand the word pedantic.

5 The composition of a simple melody of not more than eight bars, using a given opening and writing for
a specific instrument (some choice will be given) or (at candidate’s choice) the composition of a melody to
given words.

this quote is from the music theory syllabus from the "associated board of royal schools of music".... the authority in the UK for all things classical music..back in the day these classical guys would have told mingus he was doing all sorts of things wrong..
I for one am glad he and the other greats of jazz didn't listen to petty definitions of right and wrong.

Ignorance to me is assuming that U.S. English is the only type of English(read the wiki quote again)...On the flip side to this i know a classical pianist who says its wrong to use the term 16th notes. She says its "american..and they should be called semi-quavers"......personally i think shes talking pedantic rubbish..

I think a good producer must know how to write music...that's all!

What it doesn't matter if he can't be able to read music? I don't know it!
But who's gonna read my music? lol If you listen to it, and have fun with it, it's cool enought man ;)

Immagine one minute if shakespeare couldn't read...do you think that he couldn't write anything?

Defenetly, WRITE and READ are two different things!

I was just presenting a different perspective--

I agree very much so that hip hop producers are musicians--

it's just their knowledge about the formal aspects of music are generally limited---

Or non-existent :(

time signatures like 1/16

huh? thats a retarded statement.. anyone doing hip hop is in 4/4, 8/8/ 2/2 whatever, the point is it is all the same! you tell me you know music theory... FINE, but you have no idea what you are talking about for production. 1/16 is a common quantization standard, not a time signature retard, and until you can realize that you are not a "master of all things music", because you can tell me that sandy nelson was playing in 15/16 with a mad swing and drops to boot, you aint shit.

Especially around here.

F#ck you. F#ck your high horse.

F#ck your mother and your prep school too.

We don't care. and on that tip.. why don't you drop us a line on where to listen to your crappy music you make, so we can discuss your shortcomings for awhile.

D1CK. :!:

True for some people here but not for everyone..you only need to read the responses here and acknowledge your own place as an mpc user to prove that.
The bottom line is it doesn't matter, unless it helps you realise your ideas better. Music was around for millenia before music theory was. Yeah its useful, but its subordinate to, and dependant on the creative process. Music theory should be for describing and communicating what often happens in music, not for prescribing what should hapen in music. many things that are part of theory now, were considered wrong at the time...

sometimes naivety is actually a positive thing with music theory too, cause you hear with images, moods and feelings more than chords and notes.I know a girl with perfect pitch...which according to her is as much a curse as it is a blessing.

Also arguing about what words people should use seems pointless to me.
bars/measures 16ths/semiquavers

i say tom-ar-to.
you spell "color" i spell "colour" or whatever...its not right or wrong its just different.

yeah... just don't get why that matters... if they 'actually' know, or they 'just know'

for me personally --- i'm pretty musical, can play a number of instruments at
a reasonable level - i'm no ninja on the glockenspiel... but i'm workin on it.

and i've learned to read music --- but i never related five little lines and funny
shaped circles and #'s and b's with the emotions that music brought on for me

do you know what i mean?

i think that sometimes not being confined by a 'traditional' music education can
be very liberating.

mikolo's on point IMO

exactly, theory was only invented to explain sounds. its not like if you dont kno theory you will never be able to make those sounds. This thread is a pointless way to boost the OP ego. Just becuz you kno theory doesnt mean you will make heat! even tho you dont kno theory dont mean you will make trash!
