i'm always riding my bike around, keeping an eye out for old records and old electronics. i mainly buy with the intent of listening pleasure. any good samples that i find on those records is an added bonus.

at 46, i already have all the records i really want. it's the records that i didn't know i wanted, the random and unexpected finds that make it fun.

Hate to say it, but I rarely dig anymore for a few reasons. First, the dude who had an amazing collection and always had new stuff for me relocated from a flea market literally a block away to his own store about 40 minutes away. In addition, I just have too many records... and I just can't get myself to get rid of them. Don't get me wrong, I don't say that to boast. I just don't have the room. I kind of feel like one of those old ladies on hoarders. I try to go through and make a pile of stuff I can get rid of, but there's only a few in the discard pile. Then I go through that pile again and cut it in half. I finally got around to trying to get all my records in crates, and that just made shitt worse. Didn't account for the space the crates would take up... Once in a while I'll get a few off of ebay that I want just to listen to, or someone will give me a small pile... I need one of those shrinks over my shoulder to ask: Are you realy ever going to sample or even listen to My Fair Lady? Put it in the pile.

I really know what you talkin about. My music room is filled with expedits full of records, records in every corner and under the desk. But I have a problem selling some of them cause it COULD be the record with a sample that fits to the next track. And to make things even worse I cant stop to stop at the thrift shop or the next flea market and buy a few 50 cent or euro bin records (thats something between 10 and 30 records per month).
The best moments (when I bought an unknown record with great songs and samples for cheap) are the moments you'll always remember and you want that special moment again and again. Pure Addiction IMO.

IM curious where are you guy's from? because although having the internet has opened up the World to everyone (especially in the relm of diggin for beats/beat making)in the Metro NY area there are plenty of place's to digg! as no one ever said digging was or should be confined to the area's that you live in..Remember that most of the Producer's many people idolize have travelled all over to amass thier collection!!...Charity does start at the home and you should take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way (ie mom's stacks/friend's / neighbor's etc) get at everybody you can think of as far as diggin goes because nothing is off limit's!.. I mean I will agree that records are hard to find if your'e looking for something different than what everybody else is using but with that said how many times has that "long red" joint been flipped? hell Budwiser is even using Dyke and the Blazers in their beer commercials..My point is that diggin in the true sense will always involve getting dusty and those of us who do it will always continure to as it was and is a valuable part of the edcuation we recieved as young d.j.s/rapper's who have made the transition to beatmakers/producers.. It's in our gene's that's what we do!! I mean what were people doing before they could download? there was no such thing as producer packs or Dre Drums lol Dre drums came from Vinyl.. Some folk's acting like they reinventing the wheel when all were doing to some degree is music reproduction...

over here in montreal, july 1st is moving day... most apartment leases end on that day... this means the month of june is a good time to look in the garage sale section and free section of craigslist.... etc. People with 500 records often dont want to move them. Also, our city is a place where many out of towner students come to go to school. In june when classes end.... they dont want to move their collections they collected over the past couple of years while they got their educations... especially when they are leaving town on a greyhound bus. They are at your mercy to take their vinyl burdens away from them.

Your setup is super tidy considering how many records you've got Pete.

Almost every angle in my studio has a small pile of records leaning up against it. It's like a geometric wonder of the world made from vinyl.

To me it doesn't make sense to take pics when the room looks like a chock full trash can. So I took the chance and photographed the room right at the moment when it looks "a bit different" (tidy as you said). Its good to look at it to remind me how the room could look like :)
