Small simulation of sidechain on the 4k

This is a small simulation of sidechaining on the 4k I came across from my logic and ableton experience using qlink sequence on the 4k.

Basically, first go to qlink setup and go to the part.

Next assign the program to the part 1, 2 or 3 etc.

Then setup the parameters like so

Part: 3
Assign: Amplitude @5i
Type:Replace l Q5 Slider is all the way down.
Range: -100>000 l
Ctrl:0 l
Midi:3A =


Now go into the Sequence page and turn on the q5 button.

It is important to set the Step: 1/16 as this seems to work fast enough with the automation you are going to program.

The sequence has 16 steps across the which represents a measure of 16 notes or steps as it should be called. The kick of a disco, house or dance track would hit on the 1,5,9 and 13 in one measure. What you want to do it set all of those sliders to zero but bring the 2, 6, 10 and 14 to the halfway or 3/4 mark according to your ears at the tempo you want to pump with your sequence`s tempo. Set all the other sliders at 100. You have to play around a bit by ear to get it how you want but you can have a lot of fun with you phrase loop.


Lastly remember to press the q-link sequence button on to heard the effect. You can go back to the setup page and automate the slider on a separate track to add more to your tracks. You can assign it to different parameters like filter, pan, pitch, attack you name it.


It isn`t as good as a full on compression within a daw or outboard gear but it can be a scratch pad of ideas until you track out your production or if you want to do live improvisation.

Back to the lab. 4k is sampler, sequencer, control surface with a synth matrix modulater have at it.

Im a sucker for space strings and moody but melodic deepness!!!
I take it that is a 4k doing the rounds there? Or Ren perhaps?

Also setting up an LFO can do the same but perhaps even better if its the right sound. I have sort of gone off sidechaining stuff using vst compressors these days. For much of that side chain biz I use Xfer LFO tool. Its a great little plugin - does the side chaining and a lot more - no compression used. The same techniques used on the LFO plugin can be done inside the 4k - to a degree.

Hey labcoats I'm appreciate the feedback on my tracks, yes the tune started out on
4k then additional sounds and mixing was in logic along with compression sidechaining.

I was working one session a time along just doing everything on the 4k in order to go
old school and I had draw in a volume automation in ableton and thought besides the lfo tip you mention I could do it on the 4k. At first I tried the graphic editor but it took to long so I went to qlink sequencer as I remembered it is a step sequencer and it worked. These days I actually came back to the 4k cuz of step and my sequnce editor along keeping room for my other drum modules. It is good that Ren is improving but I still work mainly with my 4k go figure.

Good stuff Blue - thanks for the info. Interestingly my own Ren has been taking a back seat the past few days. The 4k has been seeing all the action.

Nice little technique.

It's easy to forget the Q-link sequencer is there sometimes, but it's a cool addition to the 4K.

Blue Haze, that house track is tight. House fan myself and that track is smooth as silk. I got to get my tracks on sound cloud. Starting with the tracks I made on the 4k before I sold it, years ago. As matter of fact I was thinking long and hard on selling my mpc5k and the roland mc909, but I got to get the tracks I made with those machines mix down and saved before selling.

Since perfecting my tracks with maschine and the ren, well mostly with maschine. I don't feel the needs for the hardware.

Yeah track all that good stuff first before selling your gear. Hardware and software I use both. I got alot of software modules now but I discover new things when I sometimes come back to the 4K.

Good to see a few 4/4 heads around. Sometimes feels a little lonely around here with all the Hip Hop meisters. I like Hip Hop, but im def more of a 4/4 type bloke!

I know those sounds I just cant recall where I know them from. I WANT THEM!!
