Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Hey. I used to post around here (c. 2004), so what's real to long-time and long-lost mpc impressarios.

I'm having a weird issue with my mpc4000. Checked the internets, the manual, my brain---and can't figure it out. Long time mpc2000 user making the upgrade to the mpc4000 issue.

I love and am terrified by the machine so far. But this strange compatibility issue is making me cry. I never expected 100% compatibility, and am thrilled with how compatible they are so far (a real thrill to load/backup 10 2gb jaz disks worth of work in like 15 minutes!)

So here's the issue: All my old files are totally loading and working, except for they won't loop. No matter what I do, every single one of my loops plays as a one shot. They are still reading as loops in the TRIM window, and WILL play as loops in the TRIM window, but as soon as leave there and go to MAIN, PROGRAM etc, they play as one shots. I've gone into the LOOP window and tried every option, have played around with sustain and decay envelopes...nothing's working. Even when I copy the snd, set up the loop again, and assign it to the same pad, same shirt.

Anyone have ANY idea what I can do? I feel like there's something really basic and simple I'm missing. At least I hope so. I don't mind manually redoing 2 bar loops or whatever, but I did a ton of finely detailed loop work, and I'd like to get that back.

All hail to whomever can help me a little on this one. //Theo

Assuming you want the sample to loop while you hold the pad, just set the Play Mode in the Zone screen to 'Loop' or 'As Played'. You can also press the Window button in this field to give additional options like alternate looping and set the amount of times the sample loops etc.

If you want to latch the sample so it keeps looping until you unlatch it, there's a 'Toggle' option in the Pitch screen. Hit the pad with the sample on it, then navigate to the pad number on the far left and press the Window button. You can then set the Play Trigger to 'Toggle'.

Hope this helps. 8)

Thanks Coz!
Yup, I want it to loop while holding the pad. I've been through every different option in those windows, but nothing from old 2K files is looping at all. Stuff Ive sampled into the 4k recently loops fine. I have no idea what's going on. Basically, no wav files that I made on the 2k will play as loops in the 4k. They WILL, however, loop in the TRIM window, but nowhere else. This is crazy. Starting to think there's some sort of invisible meta data attached to these files preventing from them looping. Has this ever happened to anyone? What am I missing?

Thanks for the tip! Why on earth would they bury that function in the Pitch screen tho?

For the record, I just found a partial solution.

If I make a new program / multi, and assign my old (looped) files, they loop fine and everywhere...the program reads the loop start/end points and loops them like a good program should.

At this point, I'm happy to recreate my old pgms on the 4k. But if any heavyweight 4k-ers know what's going, I'd be very curious to know.

Thanks!
