If my skills are good enough and my productions sound dope on my sound system, then I will consider buying monitors. Before that, I need to get my sh*t sounds right.
I totally agree, you can get good (subjective) results on a pair of headphones and a hi-fi system, but I can garantee that the sound you are mixing will sound very different once you put it on another system. so in a
sense, it defies the object of mixing. Just realize that if you start of and start sampling and tweaking all your sounds on the hi-fi, you may need to start over again once you get new speakers... that's what happened to me.
when you are doing a mix on a pair of studio monitors and you get to know them well, you are less likely to get nasty surprises when you move to a different system. I started mixing with dj headphones and I always found that the levels weren't the same when I transfered to a different sound system... shit, the bass is thin, oh that vocal is way lower than in my headphones, or damn, this mix sounds muddy on other systems.
ever since I invested in a good pair of studio monitors, I have never had this problem again. I used top come out of headphone sessions with my ears aching and not getting the results I wanted. my mixes rose to another level when I got new monitors. Mixing is about balancing levels, eq, panning effects etc. so if what your listening on falsifies this, you can only do so much....
as a lot of you have always said on this forum, if it sounds right, keep it.
that is only possible if what you are listening to is replicating properly. Try putting on some ear plugs and doing a mix.... you won't get very far cause what you're hearing is falsified by those plugs... do you see my point... I aint dissing, I'm just speaking from personal experience and beleive me, I wouldn't even bother with hi fi speakers any more.... or headphones for that matter.
