Talk about the music biz - marketing, promotions, contract law, copyright etc...

The average person with the required amount of knowledge could probably start a record label or any other type of business for that matter.

The fact is that in today's market, the real money does not come from physical record/CD sales but from other related activities such as TOURING & CONCERTS, OFFICIAL DOWNLOADS, RINGTONES, SPONSORSHIP DEALS, ACTING ROLES, TV APPEARANCES, MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS, TV COMMERCIAL MUSIC, IMAGE RIGHTS etc.....

Hence you now find some artists giving away their albums for free and then going on world tours.

Obviously major platinum selling acts may still get considerable income from music sales in certain territories, but these are exceptions to the rule.

Ultimately, those in the music business know that in the current climate the ability to get a favourable contract which covers all of the above (and more) is the way forward.

theres no way you can say the internet music biz is overrunnin labels...there would be no professional quality music without record labels...and bootleggers might cost you money trying to sell your CDs but artists still make money on advertising, touring, etc. and if theyre charged money for what theyre having made at the label. SO the artist gets screwed by mp3s, but the labels can still work, you just need to have a filter and only sign acts that wont fail on you.

I'm interested in opening up a studio, and turning it into a small underground rap, reggae, rock label someday

whats up talon! didnt know you were in here but i guess i should suspect. and i do believe it could be done. i think the bigger emphasis should be on live shows. theres a lot of cats out there now starting independent labels and they are all about the live shows. thats how you get people to really digg your music. by going to different places and puttin shows on and such. most people dont get into this and all they do is try and sell beats on the internet. there is i believe a lot more to suceeding independently. obviously the internet is a good tool to let people hear you after they see you. you can still bootleg cds or whatever, and sell them on the net. i think the keys are to have agood strong group of people with the same ideas as far as direction for the label and having the live show edge. people wanna be able to see their artists perform and not just sell studio music. both in combination are what can make a label have a chance to begin with. a label with dedicated artists that can perfom live.
