The average person with the required amount of knowledge could probably start a record label or any other type of business for that matter.
The fact is that in today's market, the real money does not come from physical record/CD sales but from other related activities such as TOURING & CONCERTS, OFFICIAL DOWNLOADS, RINGTONES, SPONSORSHIP DEALS, ACTING ROLES, TV APPEARANCES, MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS, TV COMMERCIAL MUSIC, IMAGE RIGHTS etc.....
Hence you now find some artists giving away their albums for free and then going on world tours.
Obviously major platinum selling acts may still get considerable income from music sales in certain territories, but these are exceptions to the rule.
Ultimately, those in the music business know that in the current climate the ability to get a favourable contract which covers all of the above (and more) is the way forward.
