I think you have to beware of the temptation to sell, specially with the influx of kids or garbage producers stealing on looping some drums and selling for pennies. I think you should do 2 things.
First you pick the artist to work with, workout a compensation, point system. Use the artist for your promotion, make sure that your name is well exposed with the tracks and keep the rights, get yourself light with the project.
The second strategy is sell in between beats or shrink wrap beats for demos of other artists or mgmt that willing to pay. You will find better business selling POP. R&B or mainstream beats instead of HIP HOP. Post it in common music sites as part of beat cd and just sell that cd "buco" times.
I believe that your direct goal is to get your name out there and create the buzz, then selling will be become way easier.

I pick a aritist 2 work with. I dont advertise or sell my beats. I do make hip-hop, RnB, Dance loops for DVDs and some porno trailers and sell them for 100 each track. When it comes to making tracks though, I will give the beat for free if I like the aritsts style and content. My name will get spread with the artists name and vice versa. If someone tells me "I'll give you $500 for that beat" then we talk business.
My personal opinion is that you have to have something other artist talk to other artists about. Through those connections you will get spots on some Albums, be it mainstream or underground. You have to keep in mind that everyone you work with becomes a part of your catalog as reference to your work. If someone at a major label looks at your track work and sees that you worked with a artist and he/she only sold 340 copies(example) of a cd that was released, ofcourse that will look bad on you. Thats not work you can be proud of. A wack rapper got on your beat and made you look like trash.
One artist I gave a beat to performed at Rhumbas, a club in the Bronx,NY and he got booed. It wasnt because the beat was wack ("everone was moving to it" as I was told) but once the kid came to spit on the track, no one liked his shit. So now I could never use that beat again because he basterdized it.
If selling is your game, just keep those connects up.
If giving away for free is your game, make sure you give them to aritst you feel are good enough to represent/compliment your work.

I was just asked to produce this cats whole first album. He's local and I don't expect it to go huge but I'm not sure what to charge. He wants ten tracks and I was thinking around 500 for all ten tracks but I don't know. I don't want to break the kid, I know he isn't loaded but I don't want to sell myself short. Any advice???

money is money. You got to start somewhere. BTW this gives you someone else promoting your skillz. Make sure you get your credits if they hot. Tell them to keep what you made off the project on the low (non disclosure agreement or something). That way as your credentials get stronger your prices can go up and no one can hold the lower price payed for beats against you.
