Alright... i was getting this bug alot too. NO matter if i tried to create before or after i made my beat.
But i think i found a solution (it's been working for a month... no freezes)
And it only takes like a few extra seconds.

Ok... So when you create a new folder on your harddrive... don't rename it right away. Just save it as NEWFOLDER. Then, go back to that folder, and press rename(F3). Give the name you want, and now when you press enter... it shouldn't freeze up.

Let me know if this solution works. It's much better than hookin up to the computer and backing up.. and all that.

workarounds are fine and dandy and props on finding somethign that saves your work the way it should

but although it may be redundant, it would be smart to switch to an OS that doesn't have this straight SHAMEFUL bug.

Found an easy way.

As soon as you turn on your MPC, go to the folder/subfolder in which you want to create the new folder.. do so, and name it however you want. When you hit "do it" the mpc will freeze. Turn off the mpc. When you turn it back on, the folder will be there. Now, go about making your beat, etc. When you're ready to save, just save all programs and sounds and all sequences and songs WITHOUT CREATING A NEW FOLDER. It will work fine as long as youre saving to an existing folder and not creating a new one.

Obviously, this wont work for spontaneous folders you want to create in the middle of a work session. But, if you remember to do it ahead of time (or even remember to save several backup folders ahead of time to remain empty until you want to use them), then this should be the end of this particular issue... at least in terms of losing beats.

I really wonder how many of the people having these problems actually use the expansion hardware recommended by Akai, and how many not. I personally never had those problems.

yeah, i notice this last night. i kept tryin to make new folders to see if the freeze was only temporary and i went to the load screen and saw 3 folder i had tried to create. man, this is really making me mad!

you mean ram or hard drives? either way, i don't think it matters. folks report this sht constantly, regardless of installed hardware. and go figure, no response from akai.

not to mention - when this bug was corrected by jj, the cause was found to be errors in data allocation in the saving of the original OS code.

I mean both. But ok, to be honest, as soon as there's only one with the recommended hardware having this same problem, that speaks against being that the reason. Is there anyone out there?

And I think the few people reporting it here are only a small fraction of all 1000/2500 users. I don't read the 1000 forum, but here...it's maybe a dozen people. Doesn't say how many units really have this problem. And if only a few customers actually report it (and I don't mean ranting in some forums), of course Akai won't do anything about it, because it doesn't pay off.

What Akai maybe forgets is that by networking over the internet nowadays, a bad reputation spreads much faster than it used to, because the customer is no longer an "independent unit", but interacts with other customers much more. So one user having a problem affects the opinion of a lot of others, customers or potential customers, and not only that single user.

In an entire week of use (yeah OK, not much of a statement) I haven't had a freeze when creating a new folder. But I call it common sense to have a folder ready to put the entire memory into. Saving work I am proud of is not the time to be organizing the hard drive.

It would be extremely cool if the MPC created a new folder (guaranteed not to overwrite an existing one and not freeze either) so you never really overwrite anything, but deleted older versions later.

glad to hear you've found a way around the problem.

imagine if you had to do that in Windows or Mac though - only create new folders when you just turn on your PC, not after you've run Word or Finalcut for a couple hours. that would certainly not fly...it's not like historically, creating new folders has been a problem, know what i mean?

but yeah good call on making the folder first.

the other option is, if you've forgotten to create the new folder first, just save everything in the root folder. no new folder dilemma. unfortunately that makes a mess though and you'll probably have to USB it to clean things up.

OK, I spoke too soon! It froze on me last night and I can see that the folder gets created and then the MPC won't respond. An out and out bug at the worst possible time. If you have purged a lot of samples then you NEED to create a new folder.

With USB connection I created a bunch of folders and put my projects into sub folders (so I can create more sub folders as I progress). After that, I could not copy one of the .prj files - Windows said it was a corrupt file but the MPC was quite happy to open it. When I deleted the problem folder, Windows would not empty the trash. Now I am worried that the MPC can freeze when creating a new folder AND the PC could be destroying the file structure as well.

JJOS is looking good at this point even though I really want to stay 'official'. This kind of bug should have been enough reason to release an updated OS a long time ago. But in the meantime I am creating a lot of folders, only by the MPC itself and renaming them after saving.

And so I don't now think it is common sense to have a folder ready, I am instead terrified that I could lose work so easily :)

Cheers,
B

don't let the word "unofficial" deter you. most will agree that it's a far improved/professional OS.

New idea:

Save your project to a blank CF card. Just put it into the root of the card. If you are careful, you could format the card (not the HDD!) just before you save entire memory to it. Once that is done you can go back to the HDD and create a folder. If it locks up, well you're only up for a power off and on.

Antonym, I just got my JJOS password...

Yeah agreed... its the unpredictable nature of the bug that is really annoying! I might have to give the JJ OS ago... im just hesitant because from reading the other forum it looks like i might be swapping this bug (albeit a fatal one) for several more bugs...

Why cant AKAI just fix the problem... Im going to contact AKAI about it and urge everyone else who is having the problem to do the same... unless we all write in its never gonna be an issue to them! I doubt they'll even answer but can't hurt...
